Music Review: Marvelous Handel assorti.

This is an entertaining recording as any collection of various arias would be, and as any such collection, representing only very short pieces from various operas, it has dangers of being over- or underestimated, since it is more difficult to judge about mastery by one or two arias versus the whole opera.
Of course, with such great voices as here it is a success. I also find it superior to a similar album called " Amor e gelosia" with Patricia Ciofi and Joyce di Donato singing some of the same arias under the baton of Alan Curtis. I used "Caro amico amplesso" from Poro and "Finche prendi" from Orlando for comparison.
Definitely the pairing of soprano and contralto for these arias sounds more satisfying than soprano and mezzo; and although I absolutely admire Joyce DiDonato and Alan Curtis, I think this recording with Mingardo provides a more balanced sound. Plus the conducting by Alessandrini is more expressive and accentuating.
However, when compared with "Finche prendi" from the true full opera recording of "Orlando" by Christopher Hogwood with Arleen Auger as Angelica and James Bowman as Orlando, Piau and Mingardo yield a bit, and Alessandrini suddenly turns out too slow, perhaps. As I mentioned, if Alessandrini had made a whole Handel opera with these singers, it would be possible to have another, hopefully more favorable, impression. What would be his tempo for the whole opera? But this is an inherent disadvantage of an assorted items bag. Perhaps Piau, Mingardo are some of the greatest Handel singers now and alas, we will not hear Auger live in an opera theater or have a new opera DVD with her; yet recording-wise, Arleen Auger's voice and mastery are still unsurpassed, and Bowman too sounded more as a merciless arrogant coldblooded man whose pride is wounded than Mingardo could deliver. I take one star off because there is no any full Handel opera of this ensemble, which is more difficult to do and I reserve the star for more effort and difficulty.
Overall, this is an excellent recording exposing various Handel's operas in a convenient format of short arias, sung by some of today's best singers.
