Music Review: Mellifluous and whisper-sweet - admirable beauty

There is so much to admire in this recording, which features the tender-voiced Mark Padmore. His voice is lovely indeed - I have always enjoyed the admirable sweetness of it.
The selection of arias and scenes, along with the truly delicious duet after which the disc is named (sung with soprano Lucy Crowe), is superb, giving Mark Padmore the chance to explore his interpretative range, to murmur, to whisper, to utter in mournful lament, to strike out with well articulated clarity. His diction for the English arias is beautiful; every word and its sense can be understood.
I have a few reservations which prevent me from giving this CD five stars, though. They are minor quibbles, perhaps... Firstly, Mark Padmore's coloratura is only just adequate. He gives the impression, in passages of faster work, of only just hanging on to the tiger, instead of riding it - of being ridden by the coloratura, rather than controlling it. Secondly, his Italian has a very strong English accent. And thirdly, I found the playing of the English Consort, conducted by Andrew Manze, to be a little TOO sugary and sweet, not helping to give bite when bite was needed. This was particularly apparent when Mark Padmore sang the arias of fury - he is more suited by inclination to tender arias, but he really did a noticeably good job of varying the emotional range in his chosen arias, and it just was not helped by the orchestral playing (which was otherwise beautiful). I'd have liked a little more ferocity in the orchestral forces when needed, to give a valuable contrast to the lyrical sweetness otherwise required.
In all, this is certainly a gorgeous recording in many respects. I would like to hear Mark Padmore with an orchestra that challenged him to give even more variation and intensity (and supported him in that), but the voice is truly a lovely one.
