Music Review: Oh please!

I first heard this recording (on LP) in the 1960s. I was at first impressed with the big sound of the MTC and the lush sound of the Philadelphians; of course I was 14 years old at the time. As I pursued bachelor and masters degrees in music history and musicology I became a more critical listener. I was far more impressed by the Colin Davis/London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus 1966 recording. Better chorus and soloists (Heather Harper/Helen Watts/John Wakefield/John Shirley-Quirk) that combines the English oratorio tradition with authentic Baroque style.
Then later I heard the John Eliot Gardiner recording and my ears were opened. Small chorus, excellent soloists and authentic instruments. What a revelation. Dance-like Baroque tempi, ornamentation (not only with the soloists, but also the chorus), in short, Handel the way it is supposed to be done. Also no Mozart version of the score, but again, Handel, the way it is supposed to be.
If you enjoy the slow, ponderous, elephant-galumpfing heaviness of the Ormandy recording, then stick with it. Otherwise, listen to Gardiner and/or Pinnock.
