Having enjoyed very much Boston Baroque's recordings of Handel's Concerti Grossi Op. 6 Handel: Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, Nos. 1-6, Vivaldi's Four Seasons Vivaldi: The Four Seasons [Hybrid SACD], and Bach's Complete Orchestral Suites Bach: The Complete Orchestral Suites [Hybrid SACD], I looked forward to receiving their recording of Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks and Water Music on hybrid SACD.

I am, however, disappointed in their rendition of the Music for the Royal Fireworks. The Ouverture is rather stilted and bombastic. The timpani are recorded up front and in your face so that they overpower and obscure the rest of the orchestra. This may be good for demonstrating one's subwoofer, but the value musically is dubious to say the least. In addition, there is no rhythmic spring or jauntiness in the dance movements.

I don't know whether it is the recording or the orchestra's playing, but the individual contrapuntal lines are not as well delineated as on other original instruments recordings which I prefer: Jordi Savall and the Concert des Nations Handel: Water Music; Music for the Royal Fireworks [Hybrid SACD] and Collegium Aureum Handel: Music for the Royal Fireworks; Water Music.

The Boston Baroque's rendition of the Water Music is much better than their rendition of the Royal Fireworks. Still, I would only call it pretty good. It is quite good rhythmically in the dance movements. It also has a much better balance between the instruments. Unfortunately, this recording also suffers from the same problem of lack of clarity in delineating the contrapuntal lines as mentioned above for the Royal Fireworks. Despite this, it is an enjoyable performance. I would, however, recommend the recordings of the Water Music as well as of the Music for the Royal Fireworks by Jordi Savall and the Concert des Nations, and by Collegium Aureum over these by Martin Pearlman and the Boston Baroque.
