I have trouble accepting certain facts--one is that it is not 1977. It would, though, be unfair of me to buy Hey Man, Smell My Finger expecting One Nation Under a Groove.
This album came out in 1993, back when there were still rec.......well, CD shops, and you could actually go out and find an album. And an album as a conceptual piece, not files on Itunes.
The early 1990s were not 2010, but they were not the '70s, either. Hey Man Smell My Finger is a modern album, filled with rappers, big beats, and digital production.
But it is also filled with one of music's most underrated weapons, George Clinton. And when you stop thinking Funkadelic, when you stop searching for the late Eddie Hazel's wha wha, when you forget your 1970s preconceptions, a funny thing happens: you actually begin to hear layers, harmonies, counter rhythms, tons of sounds in this modern music. You sure as hell are not listening to a Eminem album
You are listening to George Clinton. Cut off that silly afro dude--I may be talking to myself, here- the revolution is over. Get this .
