Music reviews of It's Bad for Ya

Music Review: Teacher, linguist, "A" student--one of the last great inquiring minds.
Rating: 5 Stars

It saddens me when I encounter people who just never "got" George Carlin--at least to the extent of respecting what he represented. When most comics either settle for becoming "period pieces" playing in geriatric theaters in Arizona or sell their acerbic wit and vital soul to the lowest common denominator in exchange for fame and fortune, Carlin refused to concede a thing. If anything, he got feistier, braver, more inquisitive of the human misadventure with each passing day. Dylan Thomas may as well have envisioned George Carlin when he wrote "Do not go gentle into that good night: rage, rage against the dying of light." While most entertainers avoid the "M" word at all costs lest they offend and lose an engagement, Carlin embraced it, mocking us for our inability to accept our own mortality any more than the 4-letter words which, as Marlon Brando comments in "Apocalypse Now," are more taboo to military command than the slaughter of innocent villagers.

In short, Carlin goes out raging more than ever on this final valedictory, confronting the enemy, death, in a hollering match that he knows he can't win. He carries on because like all great artists he knows that anything less than the truth would be unacceptable. Yet Carlin is far more than a "controversial," "foul-mouthed" entertainer. From his very first appearance on the Carson show to the educational tapes he made for a PBS series on language, he demonstrates that at heart he's the ideal student-teacher, forever curious about human behavior and the words used to represent it. His routines have always been extremely well-prepared, thoughtful, deliberate. Every four-letter word is planned, every single one has a purpose. He's a consummate rhetorician in the best sense of the word, and I for one would pick for my students and own kids a single George Carlin over 100 Mrs. Doubtfires or 500 Patch Adams. No comedian has more talent than Robin Williams: no comedian has wasted so much on so little.

If Carlin got a bit rougher and more abrasive in his language in the last ten years, consider the alternative: scuffling for work before an ever diminishing generation of fans. We live in a society that categorizes and stratifies its entertainers. Vegas Lounge Lizard comics like Shecky Green or, for that matter, a "national institution" like the great Bob Hope--in fact, all of the borscht belt or casino comedians--they no longer matter, becoming irrelevant, even unknown, to anyone born after 1970. (And no one would accuse George of possessing the charisma and charm of Robin.). But he countered back, perpetually reinventing himself while maintaining such a sharp edge that he was still recognizable to as many as three generations when he died.

The guy never pulled his punches, but he landed them time and time again. Paradoxically, if you got hit by any of his sharp jabs, you were the better for the experience, having learned from a genuine winner. The unexamined life is unfit to be lived. Essentially, that's all George Carlin was trying to get across to his audiences. But he knew he had to get their attention first.

Description of It's Bad for Ya

Explicit Version. One of America's first and funniest counterculture comics rips into society's sacred taboos and institutions in a new, uncensored evening of stand-up comedy. Carlin's 14th and final HBO stand-up special delivers dead-on, laugh-out-loud insights on such issues as: the advantages of being old, child worship and the failure of the so-called "self-esteem" movement. In other words, our abnormal preoccupation with BS.
