Music Review: a lot of people won't like this review

I bought George Carlin's "Class Clown" for its classic "Seven words you can never say on Television" routine, and it's by far the best bit on the CD. Since I'm not a fan of religious, political, bodily fluid, or fart humor, the rest of it sounds stale and forced. Maybe Carlin's parochial school education rocked the audience when this bit was recorded, but there's a reason it was called "parochial." As in: only you think it's funny. Non-Catholics won't get the humor.
George Carlin based his career on poking fun at the hypocrisy of banning sexually loaded words, and it was cutting edge stuff at the time. But the world has changed. Sitcoms on basic cable like "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" stretch what's possible on TV, making Carlin's shock value stock value.
Topical humor is great for talk show hosts. Their monologue is ripped from the day's headlines. But the problem with topical humor is that once the reference passes into history, so does the humor. I can appreciate the irony of bringing American style industrialism to the Vietnamese, but that war's been over a long time ago. And Vietnam is industrializing on its own. Maybe Carlin didn't really understand the age he was satirizing.
By contrast, Firesign Theatre, Steve Martin, and even Cheech & Chong are still funny (there's something enduringly funny about idiots staggering around). Monty Python is good in spots (their movies are excellent, though).
Carlin briefly had his own sitcom, and it was terrible. But it was genuine Carlin. He just wasn't that funny.
