Music reviews of Turn It on Again: The Hits (Rpkg)

Music Review: Re-review: Certainly lacking classic material
Rating: 2 Stars

Genesis are one of those groups that it is darn near impossible to assemble a good career spanning retrospective for. Especially on a single disc. Some have come really close (2005's 'The Platinum Collection'), some have provided great samplers (2007's reissued version of this release, 'Turn it On Again: The Tour Edition'), and others have been great for the really hardcore fans like myself (namely the 'Archive' box sets).

But, in 1999, Atlantic Records had an idea: to assemble a package for the casual fan of Genesis. The result? 'Turn it On Again: The Hits.' It has certainly plenty of strengths and it is LOADED with five star material, but yet, it's only deserving of two stars.

Why, you may ask?

Well, the music is great. Almost every song here ('Congo' being the notable exception, from 1997's 'Calling All Stations') is worthy of five stars. But the problem is, Genesis switched genres so much. 'Turn it On Again' tries to collect all of Genesis' stylistic changes over the years onto one disc. From Gabriel to Collins to Ray Wilson (of Stiltskin fame, he was Genesis' lead singer from 1996 to 1998), Genesis changed very much.

Now, to the music.

Everything here, as I stated above, is great. 'Invisible Touch' is EASILY one of the best '80s pop songs you can find anywhere. 'Mama' still sends chills down my spine every single time I hear it. It's just so haunting. And it's hard to find a better pop rock song than the title track, from 1980's masterpiece 'Duke.' And, the good news is A PETER GABRIEL TRACK IS REPRESENTED! Yay! 'I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe),' from their 1973 classic 'Selling England by the Pound' makes an appearance here (although I will admit, it is somewhat out of place).

The rerecording of 'The Carpet Crawlers' (called 'The Carpet Crawlers 1999' here) is great, with Gabriel and Collins trading lead vocal duties, and marking the return of guitarist Steve Hackett, who was a member from 1971 to 1977 ('Nursery Cryme' to 'Wind & Wuthering') to Genesis.

There are plenty of negatives, which is why this gets two stars.

First, WHY ARE SO MANY GREAT SONGS EDITED?!? 'No Son of Mine,' 'Tonight Tonight Tonight,' 'Abacab,' 'Mama.' You get the picture. The way to listen to Genesis, regardless of the era, is to hear the music in their full length album versions. 'Turn it On Again,' however, cuts them down -- and on some, massively -- so all of these songs could fit on one single Compact Disc.

Sure, this package has the 'Hits,' but lacking so many. I'll just name some. 'No Reply At All,' 'Behind the Lines,' 'Undertow,' 'Afterglow,' 'A Trick of the Tail,' 'Home by the Sea,' 'Anything She Does,' 'Man on the Corner.' I could go on and AND ON. And that's not even touching on the Peter Gabriel years of 1969-1975.

These statements are further proving my point. TO HAVE A COMPREHENSIVE GENESIS COMPILATION, IT NEEDS TO BE TWO OR THREE (maybe four) DISCS. You cannot condense 26 years worth of material (1973-1999) onto a single disc without having major flaws. That just can't be done. And 'Turn it On Again: The Hits' proves that point.

I recommend any of the box sets ('1970-1975,' covering the Peter Gabriel years, with the exception of 1969's debut 'From Genesis to Revelation,' '1976-1982,' covering the early days of Phil Collins, 'A Trick of the Tail' through 'Abacab,' and '1983-1998,' which covers Genesis' dominant MTV-era years, plus the album with Ray Wilson, 1997's 'Calling All Stations'), or 'The Platinum Collection' will satisfy any casual Genesis fan's needs fine, devoting a disc to all three eras of the band (making it three CDs long).

Overall, this just isn't a good set. For a casual fan who just wants to hear 'Land of Confusion' or 'Misunderstanding' in the car or at work, it'll do fine. But for the fan that really wants to get their money's worth, stick with 'The Platinum Collection,' which is FAR more comprehensive.

Unfortunately, I hate to say this, but this is not recommended.

Description of Turn It on Again: The Hits (Rpkg)

Limited digitally remastered two CD Tour Edition of this classic Genesis compilation released to coincide with their 2007 European tour. This double disc features all 18 tracks included on the standard U.S. single disc edition then adds an additional 16 tracks including 'Illegal Alien', 'Paperlate', 'Keep It Dark', 'No Reply At All' and many more. The tracks are in a completely different order than the single disc pressing as well. This double CD will be available for a limited period (until end of 2007) whilst the band are on tour (including U.S). 34 tracks. Virgin.
The sound of Phil Collins's distinctive voice set against a pulsing synthesizer and pounding electro/acoustic percussion became one of the most characteristic and ubiquitous sounds of 1980s (and early '90s) rock. And if Collins's solo work during that period seemed occasionally indistinguishable from that of his band, it was only evidence of the remarkable transformation that Genesis had undergone from its late '60s art-school roots. Indeed, the idea of an eventual Greatest Hits package would have been laughable then. But as the original quintet turned quartet (with the departure of vocalist Peter Gabriel) and then trio (when guitarist Steve Hackett left), the spotlight focused with increasing intensity on Collins and his pop and R&B sense. Though it overlooks a few contenders ("No Reply at All" and "Taking It All Too Hard") in service of balance (and the inclusion of late-model Genesis frontman Ray Wilson), this is a good sampler of one of rock's most consistent (if predictable) hit-makers. Gabriel and Hackett also return for one new track, reuniting the original quintet for a richly textured update of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 's "The Carpet Crawlers." --Jerry McCulley
