Music Review: Not as good sound as a true official live album, but nice to have!

I was really disappointed when the official Genesis live box set Genesis Live 1973-2007 (8 CD/3 DVD) didn't include any live material from the frequently overlooked 1998 Calling All Stations tour. Of course, only Genesis fans would relish in owing that tour since it was the tour done without Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel as front man, but it was a decent tour just the same. The band line up on this Live in Poland 2 CD set was: Mike Rutherford (guitar/bass), Tony Banks (keyboards), Ray Wilson (lead vocals), Nir Z (drums), and Anthony Drennon (guitars/bass). The tour offered a nice mix of tracks from the then new album, Calling All Stations, and an assortment of older Genesis favorites.
Frankly, I think some of the other comments here about the sound quality are a bit harsher than needed. Its not perfect sound quality the way a true official live album would sound (a la Seconds Out, Live Over Europe, etc.), but it is a true stereo soundboard recording taken from the pro-shot video footage (which is from Polish television). Its certainly clear, balanced, and good enough to enjoy if you want to hear what this tour sounded like in 1998. The editing job is a little choppy in a place or two, but considering that this release is NOT sanctioned by Genesis, their respective record labels (EMI and WEA) or their management, perhaps its not surprising that quality control is not what you might come to otherwise expect? In any case, aside from a couple of video clips on the Genesis 1983-1998 Box Set 5CD/5DVD, its completely unavailable officially, so this pressed aluminum 2-CD set is a welcomed addition to my Genesis collection. The digipack fold open packaging is actually surprisingly nice, although it clearly screams of an unauthorized release. Overall, if you are a Genesis completist you will welcome this release with open arms. As of 2010 anyway, there is a decent helping of Genesis live material that you can't get officially elsewhere.
