Music Reviews of Genesis Box Set 3 (1970-1975)[13 Disc Set]Music Review: Genesis at its peak of creativity Rating: 4 Stars
How much Genesis does one really need? But, I suppose if you are going to buy one of the mammoth box sets Rhino is offering, this is it, because it represents the Peter Gabriel years. I suppose there are those tone-deaf persons who will insist on the Phil Collins years, but anyone with an ear for music will realize that Genesis was at its best with Peter Gabriel, even if he sawed himself off a limb from time to time. The combination of infectious rhythms, strident lyricism, and crazy theatrics presaged that of jam bands like Phish. Gabriel always seemed to be pushing the envelope, and continued to do so when he went solo, adding in new layers of funk, African and Asian rhythms as well as starting his own music label to promote musicians the big labels wouldn't touch at the time, like Youssou N'Dour.
I guess it goes without saying that Gabriel is one of my favorite musicians, and if I had the cash I would probably plunk down the $125 for this box set. What makes it special is that it includes the music, the videos and the concert footage of the band during its musical and artistic peak before Phil Collins took over and turned it into an insufferable pop band.
Music Review: A few flaws, but well worth it! Rating: 4 Stars
I bought this package mainly for the surround mixes. I must admit I was a little suprised at some stuff. A few times I heard what appeared to be a "dubbed in" vocal. But all in all the sound was GREAT! 4 stars because in a few instances Peter sounded like he had a lisp...I had to reduce the treble a tad to get rid of this.
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway has been my favorite album since I first heard it in early 1975. Alas, I never saw the concert! The slide show from the concert was surprising and well done. Had a little nudity which I think Genesis could have done without(I reallize the album has erotic content, though.
A few highlites...
From Nursery Cryme...The Musical Box "A": Seven Stones "A+"
From Foxtrot...Time Table "A+": Suppers Ready "A"
From Selling England By The Pound...The Cinema Show "A++" (I think it is the best the set has! The keyboard was brought out in places that reminded me of some of the times I heard it live with Phil as the front man!)
A few places on bass pedals had distortion which seemed out of place. Maybe if I had better equipment...
All in all I loved the surround mixes...
Music Review: Loved it! Rating: 5 Stars
Just a few notes. The Lamb slide show is amazing. That's how I saw it years ago at the Montreal Forum when they played it in it's entirety. The Lamb is one of my favorite Genesis albums and listening it in DTS with these visuals is a treat. That's how all 5.1 remixes should be shown. The addition of optional lyrics as a subtitle track would have been nice, as it would be for any 5.1 releases of classic rock albums. But they should have removed the track number and track title on the screen or made it an optional subtitle track. A bonus would have been the complete shoot of the super 8mm movie that was used only in bits on the DVD. On the The Lamb DVD is a complete performance of Supper's Ready from a french TV show. To show it "widescreen", they cropped it up and down. I guess that's a bad habit now. What a shame. I don't mind seeing black bars left and right of the screen to see the TV show's full frame. Note to producers: do not crop!
I would have liked more visuals from the first 3 albums, but what can you get... Those were the dark days when things were not well recorded, sporadically recorded, and kept in so-so conditions.
Music Review: great music, great remix job Rating: 5 Stars
when I bought first releases of Genesis "Trespass" and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" CD set I was full of expectations about increase of sound quality. Trespass was a low cost production and through vinyl version sounds come out confused, low equalized, unclear. Trespass is really a great album with its acoustic feeling and misterious atmospheres. but original analog sounds recording and mixing was really bad. With first CD version all my expectations was unattended. The same was with The Lamb". the results was worse than original: a complete disaster. This box is the answer for me. Trespass is reborn and all other of four albums are a unique listen experience. great mix job. new arrangements, new equalization and, last but not least, great look (both CD and DVD are painted with original "Charisma label"). Even if you listen through a stereo set the result is astounding. In the DVD you can find Dolby Digital version of albums and some original video clips (there's a great good quality complete Supper's Ready suite video clip). If you love "Gabriel Genesis" jobs like me this set is for you. Sorry for bad english/american (I'm from Italy). Ciao.
Music Review: A sound engineer's perspective Rating: 5 Stars
I've been a recording engineer for over 20 years and I'm also a big early Genesis fan. When I first read some of these reviews I was excited to hear good things about the over all sound quality. I then saw some negative reviews citing over compression and bad mastering. I just got the box set a few days ago and these are definitely remixes (not just remasters) and they are MUCH better overall. You will hear different vocal tracks on occasion and the vocals generally louder. The drum sounds, guitar tones, bass tones and keyboard sounds are all much improved. The thing about the original recording of these albums (especially Trespass, Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot) is they were done on a tight budget and really are very poor mixes. I think anyone who listens to the new mixes a few times and then goes back to the original recordings will realize how much better these mixes are. The DVD's are also great with just about all live footage from that era and great interviews with all band members done in 2007.
A Must Have! for any PG era Genesis fans
