Music Review: Carla and Gene Make a Fabulous Duo.

For a final studio release, I have to say that this album didn't get a fair shake from the label who signed Gene and Carla, yet it is understandable with his reputation for not liking to tour and all his substance abuse-related behavior. Sad for geniuses like this man, because they always seem to be self-destructive. Still, in lieu of it all, this is a great way to go out.
A great folk-country-pop album that showcases Gene as a man who still has what it takes and introduces Carla Olson of the Textones to a marginally wider audience. Their harmonies are surprisingly good, considering Carla sounds so much like Carlene Carter at times that it's spooky. She contributes good songs here, particularly "Every Angel in Heaven" and "The Drifter," but it's Gene's poetic and beautifully haunting songs that really hold all the appeal here. "Gypsy Rider" is pure country biker genius, and "Del Gato," co-penned with brother Rick, is speechlessly awe-striking poetry.
There are a lot of great covers here, such as Burrito Bros.' "Hot Burrito #1," and John Fogerty's "Almost Saturday Night," a surprising number for Gene to tackle given his penchant for melancholy. The real treasures here are the remakes of "Don't it Make You Wanna Go Home" and, most stunningly, Phil Ochs' "Changes," which is very Byrds-sounding and so akin to Gene's style of poetry that I had to check the credits twice to make sure it wasn't to his credit!
This is a wonderful album, even if Carla's voice takes some getting accustomed to, but if you want a great folk-country-pop outing that doesn't sound forced and pretentious, this is a very worthwhile one to acquire. God, bless you wherever you are, Gene. We miss you!
