Music Review: A fantastic ecletic mix

I don't normally write reviews for music CD, my experience is in book. But, every once and awhile something comes around that forces me to write a review. This is one of those things.

Chances are, if you have heard the name Gary Jules and are looking for this CD it's for one song - Mad World. A cover off of a Tears for Fears song, and man what a cover it is. The haunting vocals, to the fantastic piano makes for one of my favorite songs - ever.

So, what else will you find on this CD aside from Mad World?

Well, some of my personal favorites are:

No Poetry - a gentle song that takes the listener on a journey of life. Gentle acoustic guitar and a small set of drums. A song I continue to recommend.

Downtown LA - A faster tempo, deeper timbe in Mr. Jules voice, more instruments. This song takes the listener on a trip through downtown Los Angeles and what you will find there.

Princess of Hollywood Way - Another gentle song, but in a different vein than the others. A story about choices and the effects of those choices.

When all is said and this is one of those CDs that will always stand out to me. I understand that musical preference is completely subjective, but this CD just seems to mesh so well with what I have come to enjoy in music lately. There is so much more to this CD than Mad World. If you enjoyed that song take a listen to some of the others on this CD, I don't think you will be disappointed.

If you are a fan of Gary Jules, I storngly suggest you check out Vista by David Wilcox. Two very comparable artists.

Description of Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets

Full Title- Trading Snake Oil For Wolftickets. Second album from Los Angeles based singer/songwriter. Track 12, 'Mad World', is a beautiful cover of the Tears For Fears hit and it also appeared on a soundtrack for 'Donnie Darko'. 12 tracks in all packaged in digipak format. Modular.

San Diego based singer-songwriter Gary Jules was brought to the world's attention with his haunting cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World", but Trading Snakeoil for Wolf Tickets may surprise fans expecting more of the same. There is a strong sense of West Coast country-tinged folk, with pop influences drawn from the Byrds, intelligent prose from Simon & Garfunkel and a velvety drawl from somewhere between James Taylor and JJ Cale. The plucked guitar of "No Poetry" is as beautiful as anything Taylor has produced; it could be perceived as derivative but Jules is expressing his song in the most appropriate way, and it fits the melody perfectly. The abbreviated "DTLA" ("Down Town Los Angeles") is more of an up-tempo number introduced by an analogue drum machine that swaggers in a country fashion befitting the fond imagery in the lyrics. The rest of the album follows a similar path except for the Michael Andrews collaboration "Mad World", which sits awkwardly at the end. Having the big single so far removed from the rest of the songs may seem risky but Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets has enough merit without "Mad World" to show Jules is no one-hit wonder. --David Trueman
