Music Review: Not quite as outstanding as I had hoped

But to be honest, I was slightly disappointed by the result. As artists get older, there is a tendency for the amount of care and effort they put into each new artefact to be inversely proportional to the amount of wealth they have already accumulated. These guys are outstanding musicians, and perhaps they feel that their most outstanding contributions are behind them, and they want to spend more time enjoying their wealth with their families. In the liner notes, Burton says that most of the recordings on the album were first takes. This is useful to know, but it puts me off. I want to read that months of effort went into the composition of each album, not they knocked it off in less than a week, so that Pat Metheny could go off and do yet another rushed collaboration with someone else.

That said, as a Gary Burton album, this is one of his best. In retrospect, 'Passengers' is dominatd by the emergence of Metheny as brilliant guitarist and songwriter. But here Pat takes a very modest background seat, and lets Corea duel with Burton. I guess that with three lead instruments you have to be careful not to clutter the recording. Burton's vibraphone is excellently recorded here, but alas this cannot be said for Corea's piano. As another reviewer says, it sounds distant and tinny, and it's an awful advert for the Yamaha CF3. We're almost back to the sound of the early 70s 'Hymn of the 7th Galaxy', which I wouldn't wish upon anyone.

Overall good, but a missed opportunity. Next time, I'd like Corea and Metheny to lock themselves together in a mountain hut somewhere remote for a minimum of six weeks to produce something really outstanding. It may be unfashionable to say so, but until that happens, I will continue to believe that the guitarist who worked best with Corea was actually Al di Meola.
