Music Review: some gems

There are some of my favorites on this CD, which is a series of sharply focused snapshots of lives and emotions. Few songwriters use the English language as effectively as Garnet Rogers.
'Over the Edge of the World' - a semi-country song that is great to listen to in nearly any mood, with great vocalization. 'Threshhold' is a bit long and wordy, but an insightful slice of experience and longing, with a poignant childish innocence nestled within the 'innocence lost'.
While it is long and complex, the poetry and imagary of 'Next Turn of the Wheel' are stunning - it is easy to smell, hear, touch and see the climb up the hills overlooking the ocean, and ache with the losses. When I first heard 'These Broken Hills' I almost dismissed it as just another rocker not particularly well suited to his voice, until I listened closely to the words - which give a sharp yet subtle, harsh picture of hopeless, distrustful out-of-work drifters - well done. 'Under the Summer Moonlight' is a simple, positive portrait of a long happy marriage - not something often songs are written about! And it goes well with 'All that is', written for a friend's wedding.
But 'Sparrow's Wing' itself - I find it disturbing, even though on the surface the words are hopeful, there's something very unresolved and desolate about it.
