Music Review: Greatly Blessed with Talent

Ever since Bill Gaither announced the new GVB line up, fans have been anxiously awaiting this album. I wasn't able to purchase it the day it came out, but I was longing to hear what it sounds like with the new all-star group. Well, there's plenty to like about the new GVB album, but there was also some lackluster moments as well.

Things I liked: Vocals, vocals, vocals. You can't get any better than Michael, David, Wes and Mark (unless you insert Marsh into the baritone part)amd each vocalist delivers. I was a bit concerned about how Michael would sound on this album, since his voice has gone through some changes. I was happy to discover that he still sounds great! He's not quite what he used to be, but he's still fantastic. Wes sounds incredible on "He is Here". Despite what some people might say, Wes belongs in this group, and just might be my favorite vocalist in the current GVB (At this point, David's fans will be clicking the comment button).

Things I didn't like: David is still incredible, but I was disappointed that he wasn't featured that often. He sings two songs, "You Are My All in All" and "He's Alive". Both of these are pitched pretty low for David and seem to be beneath his vocal ability. Perhaps they wanted to prove that he can sing baritone range, but all his fans knew that already. Don't get me wrong, I love these songs and he sounds great, but I don't think he was used to his full potential. Also, there were a couple of forgettable songs. I also question the inclusion of "He's Alive". Sure, it's a great song, but why record it after all these years. David already recorded on his solo album.

Listed below are some of the highlights:

When He Blessed My Soul 8/10: The bass part is pretty cool and I love the duel between Wes and David at the end. I think they enjoy singing together.

Please Forgive Me 9/10: Strong performance from Michael. Very moving song about seeking God's mercy.

You Are My All In All 10/10: David is so smooth in his delivery. I just wish he would've been allowed to go higher at the end. He is a vocal android.

I Know How To Say Thank You 10/10: Mark has never sounded better in his entire career. I was never really a fan of Mark's voice, but he sounds really good on this album. I think Bill tried to pick songs that would make Mark sound serious. Usually, we are treated to his grin-filled baritone backed by a cheesy lyric. His performance on this cd sounds more like "I Do Believe", which is a good thing.

He Is Here 10/10: I get chills when I listen to Wes sing this lyric. Wes was great when he first appeared on the GVB scene, but he just continues to get better. I really want to buy his solo album.

Vocal Performance ratings:

Bill Gaither ? How do you rate Bill? He always sounds the same. To his credit, he does sing some pretty cool bass lines on "Greatly Blessed".

Mark Lowry 8/10 This is the best he's ever sounded. He's very charismatic, but he's not Marsh. He does sound very good when he's featured in this project though.

Michael English 8/10: He sounds great, but I think Bill forgot that Michael still has a great range. This wasn't revealed on this album.

Wes Hampton 10/10: The best he's ever sounded. Quickly becoming one of my favorites.

David Phelps 9/10: Wish he could've used more of his range, but he sounds terrific when featured. Hope Bill gives him more space to do his thing on the next project.

Overall, this is an excellent album that you shouldn't miss out on. I hope the Gaithers continue making music for years to come.
