Music reviews of La Stupenda ~ The Supreme Voice of Joan SutherlandMusic Review: A must-have! Rating: 5 Stars
This is an especially important recording for Sutherland fans, for a handful of reasons. Firstly, quite a few selections on this recording are either very difficult to find elsewhere or are simply not available elsewhere (at least to my knowledge/research). Secondly, it's quite a value! Even those who fault her for perceived flaws in diction, dramatic interpretation, choice of repetoire, etc., most often concede that on a strictly technical level, her singing (in terms of beauty, tone, pitch, and coloratura) is virtually unmatched by any of peers. So, with this two-disc collection comes approximately two hours of the most glorious vocal offerings of the twentieth century--well worth the price! Finally, I'm particularly attracted to this collection because it allows you to hear Dame Sutherland's voice at all the stages of her professional career-- the brilliance of tone and stunning technique of her early days, the sheer volume and new vocal colors that came in the late 1960's and 1970's, and the late career performances of the 1980's that are, admittedly, mostly sentimental moments for those of us who are her fans. But, even if those latter tracks are less thrilling than the earlier ones, I'm still glad to hear them-- they represent an instrument that was explored and used to the fullness of its potential, and was handled with care by its master. Brava, Dame Sutherland!
I don't wish to become a echo of every other review (especially considering how many reviews this collection has already gotten), but I would like to mention a few of the selections on this collection that stand out to me:
"Serbami ognor. . . " (Rossini) I love this one because it features another of my favorite singers, the untouchable Marilyn Horne. Wonderfully executed, perfectly "together". Fun duet!
"O zittre nicht, mein leiber Sohn" (Mozart) I'm not sure Dame Sutherland has ever gotten the credit she deserves as a Mozart performer. Her usual emotional reserve and sometimes mechanical approach to singing (both of which have earned her criticism in her performance of other genre) actually make her an ideal Mozart exponent. This aria is a prime example. Her precision in phrase delivery, her superhuman coloratura, and her tasteful reserve in use of rubato in the slower first section all create a rendition of this exciting aria (heard far too infrequently outside of the context of the opera) that is, for my taste, perfection. I do have to admit that the single high "f" that occurs in the final measures is not the exemplary of Dame Sutherland's best tone. . . but every voice has its limits, and for a voice as large as Sutherland's, I'm willing to forgive a fault that doesn't occur until 3 leger lines and a space above the treble clef! And, since the duration of that pitch is a single eighth note, I hardly see that as reason to disregard the quality of the rest of the recording, although (strangely) some other reviewers seem to.
Doll aria (Offenbach) Just love it. Simple as that. There is another earlier recording she did of this aria (perhaps as part of a recording of the entire operetta?), and it too is very good; maybe even a notch better. But again, I always enjoy hearing multiple performances of a piece by the same singer at different stages of his/her career.
Nun's Chorus (J. Strauss) I know little about this work as a whole. In fact, this recording was my first exposure to it. It's simply beautiful.
"Caro Nome" (Verdi) Not her best recording (by this time, her voice was a little to large and dark to make this aria believable to me), but one of my favorite arias nonetheless, and this recording certainly isn't bad.
Lucia Mad Scene-- Just read everyone else's reviews. I can't add anything. Suffice it to say I've listened to it dozens of times, and am still dumbfounded by it. Exquisite!
"Falling in Love with Love" Admittedly schmaltzy, gushy, and a little silly. I don't care. For reasons I can't tell, I like this one a lot, too. Usually I hit the repeat button at least once for this one.
"In questa reggia" (Puccini) Once again, it's the aria itself and not necessarily the voice that attracts me. I'm not sure that Sutherland has all the edge in her voice that's needed to portray the cold-hearted Princess. But, the music itself transcends whatever shortcomings there may be. Sutherland's voice is obviously large enough to sing the aria; and, even with the lack of raw emotion, her sound is still (as always) beautiful.
I think enough has been said already about the Handel, Esclarmonde, et al. by other reviewers, so I won't take up any more space with my thoughts on all the other selections. If you like Sutherland at all (or are unfamiliar with her and want to hear a sampling of her voice from all stages of her career), invest in this cd set. A definite treasure.
