Music reviews of How Are We Getting Home

Music Review: Now That's More Like It!
Rating: 4 Stars

After my big disappointment with "Special Reserve", I was very glad to see that Gaelic Storm was coming out with another original album, "How Are We Getting Home?"

I pounced on it the very day it came out. My first thought, after seeing the CD's comical cover art (a couple of obviously plastered chimpanzees) was this: "They've gone ape!"

But we already knew that. More important is this: they're still capable of producing energetic, toe-tapping music with completely outrageous lyrics. Indeed, this is the most outrageous CD they've done to date. This is evident from the very first track, "I Miss My Home", a lyrical warning to young men to listen to their "Mammies" and watch out for those New York hot dogs with mustard!

Another memorable tune is "Punjab Paddy", the saga of an Irishman who moves to India and trades Michael Flatley (and his tattoos) with Ravi Shankar, his "praties" (potatoes) with tea and rice and his whiskey with ... whiskey. The CD notes state, for the record, that no sitar players were injured in the recording of the track. This is good to know.

And then there is "Fish and Get Fat", the paean to a stay in a town in western France, away from the distractions of modern living. The music reminds me a little of "Swimmin' in the Sea", on the "Tree" CD. A sample of the chorus:

I'm genuine synthetic fake, lock me up and let me bake,
Turn me over now, I think I'm done,
Sprinkle me with MSG, a word or two of sympathy,
Slap me `round and throw me in a bun!

No mention of mustard here, French or American.

This CD stylistically reminds me most of Gaelic Storm's third album, "Tree", in that they have continued to produce "modern", home-grown songs, which outnumber the traditional melodies about three-to-one. Indeed, about the only traditional tunes present are the instrumental sets, namely "Stain the Grout", "Cab Ride to Kingston" and "The Lone-Star Stow-Away", the latter inspired by a large, Texas rodent who eats Steve Twigger's favorite winter jacket. And there is "An Cailin Deas Rua", a traditional Irish Gaelic tune which reminds me most of "An Poc Ar Buile", the Gaelic tune appearing on the "Tree" CD.

With the departure of Kathleen Keane from the group's lineup, the group's vocals have largely reverted to a fully masculine sound; new fiddler Ellery Klein does not sing. Guest artist Nanci Griffith does appear in "Tear upon the Rose". I miss Kathleen's virtuoso pennywhistles, but they've been replaced by something I just love: the pipes. It seems that new member Tom Brown started out as the group's sound engineer, until they discovered that he could engineer better sounds with the highland bagpipes. These appear in all three of the instrumental pieces, and I think I caught a hint of them in the background of a song or two.

And what about the CD's title? A few of the tracks celebrate the joys of getting as far away from home as possible and staying there, at least until "Last Call". But what if everyone has had a pint or two or five too many, and whiskey to boot, with no designated driver in sight? Furthermore, what if the group's van just got towed away?

The only real drawback to this CD is that, if you want to read the lyrics, you have to visit the group's web site. Which is hard to do if you're the passenger in a car and want to follow along with some of the more obscure lines. Oh well, I suppose I can print them out. Unfortunately, the Gaelic is not translated. According to the CD notes, "An Cailin Deas Rua" is a love song featuring tender lyrics like "I prefer you to cows," so a translation would have been nice.

All in all, if you're a Gaelic Storm fan and liked "Tree", you'll probably like "How Are We Getting Home?" as well. If you're new to Gaelic Storm, you might find it useful to get some of their earlier music also. It's an interesting study in contrasts; the group has changed quite a bit from their Titanic days.
