Music Review: First rate playing and amazing improvisations with Latin American repertoire

Gabriela Montero is a first rate pianist and an absolutely phenomenal improviser. She is getting some of the recognition she deserves: she played at the 2009 presidential inauguration with Perlman and Ma. She is completely in charge of this repertoire, and her improvisations sometimes even sound better than the composed pieces! There is one piece that might seem not to fit with the others, Ginastera's "American Preludes." Ginastera wrote some impressive and original works fusing Latin American rhythms with classical composition, such as Estancia and the Harp Concerto; his music sometimes comes paired with that of Villa Lobos. To this listener, these pieces do not reach the standards in the works mentioned. Next to the other pieces, which are lighthearted and at times amusing, they sound stark and even at times astringent. However, Ms. Montero makes the most of this, as indeed she has done with music from the Baroque through the modern in her other albums. If you are ready for this one section of strong contrast, you definitely will find this an album that deserves the highest rating for the excellent playing and the amazing improvisations.
