Music reviews of God Bless The Go-Go's

Music Review: The Go-Go's Are Of
Rating: 4 Stars

God bless 'em, indeed! Things just haven't seemed as.....fun....without the second all-time best all-female band around (sorry folks, but the number one spot still belongs to, and will ALWAYS belong to, Fanny!). So why is this CD ultimately less than satisfying? I mean, the ladies are singing louder and playing harder than ever before, "GOD BLESS......" is full of some of the band's smartest lyrics yet and there's a very nice production sheen to the whole package. So what's the problem? Maybe it's that it seems like the girls are trying to prove something, that they're trying to show us that they can still "ROCK!" The CD starts off nicely enough with the energetic "La La Land." All pounding drums, soaring vocals, grinding guitars and a wink-and-a-nudge lyrics, the song is the band's way of saying "Hey, America, we're back!" But while "Unforgiven" features some of the CD's best lyrics ("Always tryin' to clean up my catastrophes/Taking full responsibility/Living my life like every day is the last/Remodeling the wreckage of my past") and "Apology" offers a fantastic lead vocal from Belinda Carlisle, mixed with some killer backing vocals, by the time you get to "Stuck In My Car" everything is starting to run together....the pounding rhythm section and breakneck guitars threaten to overrun and engulf the whole thing. The only thing that really prevents that from happening at this point are some kick-butt vocals. Things are shaken up a bit with track five, the moody "Vision Of Nowness." With it's sixties vibe it builds, it subsides, it builds again.....and ultimately provides a feeling of variety, thought and restraint that's missing from a lot of the CD. The nice changes continue with "Here You Are", a soaring ballad that uses acoustic guitar, cello and keyboards with exquisite results. Things revert back to the no-holes-barred pace with "Automatic Rainy Day." Mixed down to prove what a great drummer Gina Schock is and to showcase Charlotte Caffey as a stand-out lead guitarist, the track actually has the opposite effect.....it highlights the fact that Schock has become a very basic drummer, with very little finesse, while Caffey has lost a lot of the subtlty in her fret work, relying on the same chords over and over. "Kissing Asphalt" is a fun track, if only for the unique blend of surf music meets serious lyrics (this song is obviously about Caffey's battle with heroin). Next up is "Insincere", the most honest, heartfelt track on "GOD BLESS....." - the playing is subtle, enhancing Carlisle's hushed, yet pained, vocals. The dead-on instrumentation compliments the delicate lyrics. "Superslide" is more of the grinding, pounding, belting babes trying to prove something that doesn't need to be proven. Trying to be cool and cosmic, "Superslide" comes across as a track that, in the end, maybe should have been left off the CD. It certainly doesn't add anything. The same could be said, albeit to a lesser degree, about "Throw Me A Curve" and "Talking Me Down", though "Throw......" does feature a nice socially conscious message, and "Talking....." sports some killer piano riffs, an instrument the band would be wise to use more frequently in the future. The album closes on a very strong note, the wounded, biographical "Daisy Chain." Rather than trying to be something they're not any more (twenty-something punkettes), "Daisy Chain" strips the band of all pretense and shows them for what they are now......talented, forty-something women who had it all, in many ways blew it, then lost it and, now, could regain it.....if they're really willing to try. What's it going to take? Well, a lot of shaking things up....altering their tried and true riffs, coming up with some more intricate vocal arrangements/harmonies and the addition of more varied instrumentation (lots more acoustic guitars and keyboards). In many ways "GOD BLESS THE GO-GO'S" isn't the band's comeback album......it's more of a warm-up, a "getting-their-feet-wet-again" release. I think their true comeback will be their next release. Until then......God bless 'em!

Description of God Bless The Go-Go's

HDCD. 13 tracks. SM.
After a couple of short-lived tour reunions, the Go-Go's have made it stick. God Bless the Go-Go's is their first studio album in 17 years, carrying on as if Belinda Carlisle's sparkling solo career and Jane Wiedlin's slightly less stellar one had never happened. The tough, assured sound of 1984's Talk Show is front and center here, at once a sonic counterpoint to the lyrics' general sense of frustration ("Automatic Rainy Day," "Unforgiven") and barricade in front of their ultimate triumph in its face ("Throw Me a Curve," "Vision of Nowness"). Carlisle, for her part, rides the roar and jangle like "Head Over Heels" was just yesterday, as if the success she had on her own was just another hoop to jump through before getting back to business. Now in their 40s, these women have matured without resigning themselves to the world they once swore wouldn't stop them. God Bless isn't an unflawed gem, but after a few spins, even some of its lesser concepts begin to sound like pieces of a manifesto the Go-Go's have patched back together to shout out loud. --Rickey Wright
