Music reviews of In on the Kill Taker

Music Review: Very good album.
Rating: 5 Stars

I own most fugazi albums, so why have I chosen to review this one first? simple: Im listening to it now, and it is the most aggressive album they have ever done (aka it will wake you up) from the start of facet squared, it is instantly recognizable that this is not a regular fugazi album, but more along the lines of a punk album, and that variation stays for most of the album. public witness program has a catchy chorus that sounds like a combination of the minutemen (in terms of lyrics) and minor threat. smallpox champion is one of the rare instances of Guy writing straightforward political lyrics. Great Cop is the predecessor to Back to Base on Red Medicine, while Walken's Sydrome is just Guy rocking out.

but there are other, slower themes. Returning the Screw is a slow, and sometimes hard to hear number, but it has a good placement on the album. Rend It is one of my favorite fugazi songs, and probably the closest to original emo they will ever get to again. 23 beats off follows Rend It, and has one of my favorite fugazi noise sections in it, but some people dont really like noise so other people may not like this song. However most people do agree that the placement of the brilliant sweet and low right after the noise is a perfect idea. afterward, cassavetes starts up. Personally I think it sounds better live, but it is a fairly good song.

The last two songs are completely different from everything else on the album almost. It seems that Ian and Guy wanted to write a slower closer, and so they came up with two different songs, thought both of them were equally good, and put them on the album. personally, I like instrument's music more, and last chance for a slow dance's lyrics better (coughing inside your coffin, etc), but both songs are enjoyable and are sorta sludgy.

overall, this is a very good boost of energy from fugazi, but is definitely not their best album overall. buy this, as well as all their other albums.

By far the most unrelievedly aggressive of this seminal D.C. foursome's seven albums, this 1993 collection assembles all the essential elements of Fugazi's aesthetic--strafing melodic tension, dynamic shifts, and unrestrained lyrical fury--and drives them into the psyche with nary a hint of sonic subtlety. That might sound one-dimensional, but somehow Ian MacKaye and company manage to wring a full spectrum of emotional impact out of that small patch of territory. From typically vociferous political plaints ("Smallpox Champion") to decidedly personal missives designed to provoke self-examination ("Great Cop"), the songs invariably cut to the bone. The highlight? "Cassavetes," which stutters and swells with remarkable grace, paying oblique tribute to John Cassavetes, an outsider director who was to Hollywood what Fugazi is to the music industry. --David Sprague
