Music reviews of Emil Gilels Edition; Historic Russian Archives (10CD Box Set)Music Review: "A case of extraordinary talent . . ." Rating: 5 Stars
After collecting classical music for as long as I have (some twenty-one years) there's not much new here. Even so, I'd be lying if I said that anything in this set is "ordinary." Gilels' art has been described as heat-of-the-moment, show stopping virtuousity, but that doesn't do him justice. He was an artist first and foremost, and a well rounded one at that. So, yes, every note reveals his extraordinary talent, but it also showcases his deep commitment to the composers intent.
As I look at this amazing box set, several performances come to mind. Tops on the list, of course, are the two (!!) Liszt B minors. Both performances, as expected, contain the necessary pyrotechnics and spiritual insight that this piece demands. The older recording, taped live in 1949, may not have the best of sound, but it more than makes up for this loss with a scintillating performance that has to be experienced to be believed.
Also on this list are some of my favorite works for piano by Prokofiev. In this instance that translates into the 2nd, 3rd and 8th Piano Sonatas, Visions fugitives and the Toccata. Perhaps it's just the newness that I'm responding to, when I tell you that these are by far and away the best recordings that I have ever heard of Prokofiev's 2nd Sonata and Toccata. Maybe there's some of that. But I can tell you that even after comparing these performances to others - and I've got them all! - they still hold up. And these are live recordings of Prokofiev, no less. Nothing short of amazing! (With these recordings, I can finally say: "You're right, Mr. H. We don't need your take on the Prokofiev Sonatas.")
The rest, it goes without saying, is wonderful music and worth having. I mean, I can only think of one or two recordings of the Schumann Sonatas that bring together the "whole" scope of these works as Gilels does here, so that it makes perfect sense to the listener. The same goes for the selected works by Scriabin, Medtner and Weber in this set.
Having said that, there are a couple of things that caught my attention here. First, Gilels has an incredible touch when it comes to Debussy. I have many performances of Images, and most of the artists are either too direct or too reverential in their approach to the music. But Gilels just plays it as only he can, and the result is sheer genius. Too bad, however, that this "playing" didn't carry over to the Rachmaninoff piano concerto, which, sad to say, lacks the enthusiasm, the poetry and the fire of the recording of the same piece with EMI.
Don't let this one little blemish stop you, though. There is so much beautiful music here that will blow your mind, as it did mind.
Even the most ardent of Gilels' followers, of which there are many, will find this issue a welcome edition to their collection. We are in debt, yet again, to Brilliant Classics for another magnificent release.
