Music Review: One-you lock the target, Two-you bait the line

If I had been a part of the the Industrial dance club scene in the late Eighties and early Nineties, I most likely would have fond memories of dancing to "Headhunter," one of EBM's most famous and successful songs. Unfortunately, I was only 6 when Front By Front came out, and was already in my twenties before I even heard of the band called Front 242. So yes, I was a little bit late to the party. Front 242 were clearly a tight, innovative group of Belgians who had indelible influence on electronic music... but, and forgive me for saying this guys, Front by Front isn't for everyone. Obviously, "Industrial" music as a whole is generally an acquired taste, but for dance music this really is pretty bland stuff, with shining moments too infrequently mixed in. One of those moments is "Circling Overland," which is an ominous-sounding track with a killer beat that pulverizes itself into your heart. And, of course, "Headhunter" is like Hemingway, whether or not you like it, it should be required reading for beginning 'industrial' fans.

As a whole, the music of Front by Front is a collection of some truly varied drum (machine) patterns and styles that shift and blend within each song in a surprisingly hyper-kinetic way. This is especially notable on songs like In "Rhythmus Bleiben" and "First In/First Out." Actually, I'd describe this album as being completely percussion driven, as the other musical elements just aren't as complex... or interesting. The keyboards are pretty standard stuff here, as well as the vocals, which remind me a bit of Front Line Assembly's stuff (which according to this reviewer means- mediocre). With the except of those on "Headhunter," lyrics are basically an afterthought. So, like I said this is an album of complex and ingeniously crafted drum beats. Unfortunately, those very drum beats, though cleverly arranged, just don't hold my interest very long. And, as a result, I can't give this as high a score as other reviewers here. Don't get me wrong, this is by no means a bad album; it deserves to be recognised as a classic of the genre. I just think that at the end of the day, if I want to hear some percussion based EBM, I'd much rather listen to something like Nitzer Ebb's That Total Age. You can write it off as personal preference if this is your cup of tea, but I think there will be a lot of younger people who just won't "get" this. Then again, Front 242 is probably more easily digested than Niter Ebb... so take that as you will.
