Music Review: Pure sugar with added intelligence

I don't usually write these reviews, but this CD required me to say something about it here. If you like ear-candy power-pop / emo influenced songs that will have you humming the chorus in your head all day, this is the CD for you! Part Click Five, part Simple Plan, this collection of songs has punchy crisp guitar, enjoyable lyrics, and more hooks than the cast of Deadliest Catch (yeah I know, they use cages but I liked how that sounded!). There isn't a filler song in the bunch; even the slow songs have strong merit here. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, so if you are more of a powerpop purist, this may well be a bit over produced for you. If you like tight harmony, funny lyrics, and a catchy chorus in every song, you'll love this CD. There are a few tunes from their EP that I think should have been included here such as Celebrity Life and Highschool as they both show off the guitar player a bit better than these songs do so if you love this one, grab the EP as well.

Like many of today's breakthrough musical acts, The Friday Night Boys got their start on the Internet. Just one year after this group of tight-knit high-school acquaintances formed thegroup, they self-recorded and released The Sketch Process EP, and were shocked by the way it took off. The EP would go on to be the catalyst for the band's appearance on MTV's Total Request Live's 'On Your Radar' segment for unsigned
bands. While selling over 40,000 downloads, it caught the attention of All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth, who signed them to his new imprint The Party Scene in conjunction with Fueled By Ramen Records and Photo Finish Records. Once you hear
the band's debut full-length Off The Deep End, it will be no surprise why MTV recently christened The Friday Night Boys one of their 2009 Rock Rookies. Produced by Emanuel Kiriakou, the album shows how much the band has grown in the past
year and features everything from instantly accessible power ballads ('She's Finding Me Out') to energetic pop-punk rockers ('Suicide Sunday') and everything in between.
