Music Review: The Duke's Mixture

The Dukes of Burgundy in the 14th and 15th Centuries ruled over the richest, most economically progressive, most aesthetically opulent lands of Europe. Charles the Bold (1433-1477) and his father Philip the Good may not have held the title King but they were the mightiest patrons of the arts of their era, and Burgundy (now the Benelux and a large swath of France) responded to their stimuli with exquisite painting and sculpture, gorgeous clothing, charming architecture, and the magnificent polyphonic music style that swept all of Europe and that we now label as "Franco-Flemish." Of the early 'Burgundian' composers, the best known today include Guillaume Dufay, Antoine Busnois, Gilles Binchois, and Pierre de la Rue, all represented on this CD, though in fact Dufay was never employed at the ducal court.

This CD turns out to be a kind of sampler of the genres of music familiar to the Burgundian court and its courtiers: instrumental heraldry, instrumental dances, sacred vocal music, secular chansons of love, and 'table music' for extravagant feasts. The eighteen tracks include performances by seven different ensembles of diverse provenance, even the "se la face ay pale" chanson and gloria by David Munrow's pioneering Early Music Consort, recorded in 1974. As one might expect from a sampler, the tracks are quite variable in style and diverse in quality. The most interesting, to my ears, are the shawm/trumpet/trombone tracks - 8 of the 18 - by Les Haults Menestrals de Charles le Temeraire. No musical instrument has ever sounded more immediately "thrilling' than the renaissance shawm, and truly skillful shawm players (then and now) can compel an audience's attention like nothing else. It's true, one must admit, that the shawm has no capacity for sounding otherwise than thrilling. There are few recordings on the market that feature 'haut' (loud) consort music as well played as this. The Dufay motet "magnanimae gentes laudes" is an example of the sophisticated complexity of Burgundian sacred music, sung on this CD by three members of The Hilliard Ensemble. Those tracks are the highlights of the compendium.
