Music Review: Gaspard for the ages

I believe Pogo is an incredible pianist, but not necassarily an incredible musician. His performances are often distinctive for their strangeness, and, like Gould, can come across as being different for difference sake. The star of this disc is the Gaspard, which despite its neglect of Ravel's intentions, is one of the most phenomenal versions I have heard. When Pogo is direct contrast to what Ravel wanted, he seems to shine the brightest. For example, Pogo repeated notes in Scarbo are the most distinctive in any recording I have heard. Listen to Michelangeli's 1959 account-the finest version there is on record-and you can barely hear them. Listen to Francois and again, they are so subtle you barely notice them. Pogo plays them almost forte, and the effect is really exhilarating, but is it right? Ravel said he wanted the beginning to be like a faint scratching, he DID NOT WANT THE REPEATED NOTES TO BE HEARD TOO DISTINCTLY. Well, Pogo does the opposite. The result is illuminating and I think it is quite successful too, but the way Michelangeli plays it-saves the pounding of the repeated notes so that they culminate and peak later on-to produce a massive effect-a climax so to speak-Pogo plays them the same later as he does in the beginning. Again, I must reiterate Pogo the musician[not pianist] has difficulty understanding the structure of this most complex piece.
Another case in point-the Prokofiev Sixth Piano Sonata. I have never heard such cavalier and sloppy pedaling. He does not understand this piece in any way. Compare this version to Richter, and its like glass to diamonds.
Chopin Second sonata-more of the same. The final mvmt is drowned in the pedal-the funeral march is taken too fast-I get the sense he doesnt understand what he is playing-but is doing it more as an exhibitionist.
By the way-his tone is sensational.
