Music Review: The True and Rightful Bidder for the Mantle of Horowitz

The choice for this disc clearly stems from Schumann's Scenes from Childhood.
The repertoire here may appear naive; the playing and the interpretation never so.
The Mozart C Major Sonata was the work which, according to Lang Lang, reminded him of his once waning enthusiasm for the piano after a particularly bad experience with one teacher. As performed here, the piece is pearly lucid, tender and intimate. No trace of any `bang' whatsoever. The Alberti bass in the last Allegretto movement is effective and the runs sparkle with ingenuous, elastic innocence with hints of Lang Lang's own steely resolute character. Lang Lang as a Mozartian would attract any zealous conductor for a series of the Mozart concerto recording.
The Chopin unleashes quite another opposite: in the over 38 minutes' version of the B Minor Sonata, Lang Lang brings some exquisite playing and canny pedalling. Chopin's Largo provides ample opportunity to for Lang Lang to showoff his sustained legato; the second and last movements display brilliant momentum and diverse colours, but may not be to the taste of some diehard purists.
Lang Lang's `Scenes of Childhood' are as sweet as they are passionate, evident as in Fuerchtenmachen. The Knight of the Hobby-Horse is so vivid that it literally mounts your rooftop. The gentle lullaby at Kind im Einschlummern is reminiscent of the same one that once rocked the infant Lang Lang himself. Lang Lang's outstanding sense of Schumann's musical pulse and breathing spaces marks this version of Scenes from Childhood easily competitive artistically with other classic versions of Cortot, Foldes, Gieseking, and even Horowitz.
Liszt once remarked that his 19 Rhapsodies are "a kaleidoscope of the human soul in all its diverse emotions." The ongoing parade of pomposity and egocentricity as well as polar ecstasies can be savoured here as a keyboard display of artistic bravura. The bass harmonies from Lang Lang's shifting dynamic plate knocks you right over before the repeated treble notes and juxtaposed syncopations blow you away in the strictest classical style.
In this Lang's bid for the mantle of Horowitz, it has become evident that it is going to be very hard for the competition to raise the ante.
