Music reviews of Schubert: Impromptus For PianoMusic Review: Remarkable Sense Of Musical Perspective!
Schubert did not invent this kind of small, detached piano piece, however, he wrote them so much better than his forerunners that they were the first music of the sort to win a lasting place in the world's pianistic repertory. In the C minor, Op.90 Perahia's many collaborations with the great Greta Krauss come to the forefront. It is in novel form with a double set of variations on alternate themes, both of which highlight Perahia's exquisite levels of poetic inspiration. He conveys the second theme with a mysterious, elusive charm. At its climax Perahia develops unexpected dramatic force that reminds one of "The Erl King", and indeed, the excitement is followed by a cadence in triplets borrowed whole from that song. Perahia fills the entire Impromptu with such immense characterizations that it becomes as ethereal as any of the others. The second in E flat major, is a foretaste of the Chopin Etudes. Perahia executes the somewhat frivolous first theme with remarkable fluency and ease offering a performance that is impeccable and refined. The moment Perahia begins the third Impromptu in G flat major, an atmosphere of tonal purity, finesse, revelatory warmth and glowing ardor shapes the entire performance, particularly in the celestial melodies and harmonies. There is another contrast no less satisfying, and no less Chopinesque in No.4 in A flat major. Perahia is incisive and compelling between the flying sixteenth-note figures and the solid chord sequences. He defines the darker, more sombre yet emotionally expressive "Trio" in such a way that lifts to a climax which almost outvies the future Polish master. Most exceptionally for these pieces, Op.142 starts quite uncharacteristically and, in bars 9-10, surprises us with a whiff of Beethoven. Then after a couple of pages, the composer comes delightfully to himself in the (pp) sempre legato melody. It takes the innate depth and understanding of the genre Perahia possess to end these Impromptus that have the least considered interest of the lot. He provides the dramatically extreme dynamic contrasts and sharply motoric rhythms needed to convey the most arresting features of imitations found in their framework. The playing continues to entice by conjuring a premonition of a gypsy dance by Bizet, with here and there Slavic coloring. The overall performances given on this recording by Murray Perahia are refined in every department each of them marked by remarkably clear textures, every note distilled through fertile imagination and remarkable for their intrepid emotional scope, athletic agility and heart-felt delicacy. This is perhaps the most inspiring and formidable interpretations of the Schubert Impromptus Op.90&142 I have in my own music library which contains at least twelve CD's of these Impromptus by other highly regarded virtuosos.
