Music Review: "Ave Maria", Indeed!

How profound it is that this short prayer that we know in English as the "Hail Mary" has inspired countless musical works, of which the 16 tracks on this album are only a fraction. And even these tracks represent centuries of music tradition, and interpretations from different cultures around the globe, in Latin, German, Italian and English.

Illustrious opera talents Leontyne Price and Plàcido Domingo sing on 5 of these tracks (separately, not together). Price offers renditions of the 2 most familiar Ave Marias, by Gounod and by Schubert, as well as an aria by Verdi from the opera "Otello". Domingo also sings the 2 familiar ones, and his Schubert has participation from the Vienna Boys Choir. In another Schubert rendition, the dignity of famed civil rights figure Marian Anderson is quite impressive. Film star and soprano Jeanette MacDonald sings Gounod's composition with almost childlike fervor. Two other sopranos, Carol Vaness and Katia Ricciarelli, sing the "Otello" aria. Irish tenor John MacCormack offers a song in English set to music from the opera "Cavalleria rusticana"; he also sings the traditional Gounod version in Latin. Tenors Mario Lanza and Enrico Caruso are represented as well. Two of the tracks feature beautiful extended violin solos. The only track I don't particularly care for is Jerry Hadley's performance of the Schubert composition, and that is because it has brass accompaniment, which is not to my liking for this purpose.

I was a little apprehensive about hearing 16 Ave Marias in a row; but the variety and apparent sincerity (even though it could be an occupational affectation) made me enjoy listening to the entire album 3 times, over a period of a week, before I wrote this review.
