Music Review: A Real Charmer

Poor Franz Lachner ! The only music of his to be played regularly doesn't even appear under his own name. These are the recitatives that he composed for an 1859 Frankfurt production of Cherubini's MEDEA. Much underrated, he is really a composer of considerable melodic charm and harmonic interest.
This disc of his various sets of Heine lieder is absolutely lovely.
Not only are the songs gorgeous, but Rufus Muller's singing and Christoph Hammer's piano work are superb.
The Oehms label's sound recording is flawless, and once again they are to be praised for risking such rare repertoire.
German texts are included, but no translations.
