Music Review: A great CD but a raw deal

As a clarinettist myself I've always been a fan of Sabine Meyer. Her playing is unparalleled, and this recording is no exception. The one problem I have with her is that she never records full cycles of composers' music. Her student, Julian Bliss promises to be every bit as talented as she is, if not moreso. Sabine's a tough act to follow, but Julian can hold his own. This CD is a good value for what's on it but an unfortunate release for what it's lacking.

Krommer's music in general is nothing profound. It is however highly listenable and enjoyable. Think of it as extreme divertimento-style music. It's cutesy and fun, but it will by no means change your life or bring you to tears. It's good music to have on hand for those times when you want some neutral background music to break the silence.

Krommer actually wrote at least three concerto style pieces for two clarinets; the Op. 91 on this disc, the Op. 35, and the "Concertino Italien." She recorded the first two with her brother Wolfgang years ago. Buy that recording if you can find it...it's wonderful, and the best recording of the two double concertos I've heard. The concertino is a hard to find recording which, as far as I can tell, has only been recorded once by Dieter Klocker in a full cycle recording of the three works. The concertos lack spirit but the concertino is good if you can get your hands on it.

As for the Spohr concertos, Michael Collins recently recorded all four of them with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. I highly recommend these recordings if you want the set. Several others are out there too, none of which I felt the need to listen to after hearing the Collins. The music is a bit more intense than any of Krommer's works and will require more attentive ears to enjoy, but it's worth it...especially the Concerto No. 4 with its high sense of drama in the first movement and the extreme bravura in the third.

So I guess to sum it up, buy this CD if you want a good introduction to the music of Krommer and Spohr. If you like it though and want more, don't sit around waiting for these two to complete a set because it won't happen. Unfortunately.
