Music reviews of Haydn: Piano Sonatas, Hob:XVI, Nos. 42, 48-52

Music Review: One of the guys on the Moon, playing golf, humming
Rating: 5 Stars

Glenn Gould hums along with some these piano sonatas. Hob. XVI, Nos. 42, 48-52. In fairness I suppose I should say that that musicological information came from the liner notes which I read because I thought they were talking about Hob Nobs. A biscuit you understand that came from a different time and place but one which wreaked, if anything, more havoc than Gould's blasted Arrowroots. Who but the cognoscenti know anything about anything? Well it's not just the cognoscenti anymore for a start. I think the cognoscenti are in fact now a minority and are outnumbered in the gazillions by bleating pundits and bozos knocking each other over to log on and type unstoppably. Everybody simply cannot be that bright. It stands to reason. Take the Irish for instance, I'm one of the brow-contracted firbolgs meself but managed thank Christ to escape to the quiet of New York just prior to the little island that could's astonishing economic upturn. That--and it's one of the few dates I remember with any precision--was in the Autumn of 1991. Phew sez me, still. Natives over there in Eire now are positively swimming in Yoyos and giddy as gobdaws on account of it. They are I'm told--incessantly--issued with cell phones at birth. Technology that permits Irish people to talk more than they actually did when I was too young to be anything but a bog-bound captive over there should not in my opinion be permitted. The gift of the gab? Get a load of them now. The word "muckheap" in a book I happen to like springs to mind but I might in fact be thinking of another book entirely which used the word "muckball." Both books now that I remember them now more or less miraculously sentence for sentence were astonishingly well-crafted and funny too, which often helps. Music though, some music, this music--then I do believe I'm a fan of the composer through and through. Sometimes it isn't even just the composer either. I heard Glenn Gould play one of these Haydn piano sonatas one time on the radio in the very early AM, I was having breakfast which was very likely porridge given the time of year. The tune they chose was the third one, Sonata in C Major Hob Nob. XVI: 48: I. Andante con espressione, and shoot me if my hair doesn't still stand straight up in my scrunchy whenever that bronze medal comes up heads. I've always liked this record and have had something of an enduring penchant for the piano. I lived in a family once that owned a piano. One time I tried to sound the entire thing at the same time by lying down on the keyboard but there are a lot of good reasons why that didn't exactly pan out. Have been for some considerable time in any case listening to this plangent and punchy record, composed by one European felly and played by another felly, a Canadian this time. Just in case though you experience one of those rare occasions when Glenn Gould or Haydn ain't that particular day's particular thang listen if you get a minute to Mountain's first record--you can't even hardly begin to understand how good Climbing! is until you get a protracted and hugely-loud earful of Nantucket Sleighride. And not that you need yet another reason to listen to Nantucket Sleighride either but check out just for a larf My Lady on those enormous and enormously comfortable earphones that make you look like you're semaphoring aeroplanes on a runway and maybe try out a little humming of your own. That's Mountain's second record I realise but I ain't kidding about what reverberatingly good vibes it sets back up for the first album. I read and heard some things about Glenn Gould so I'll simply conclude here by suggesting that when the mojo you need turns out to be some sort of quirky and brilliant Nanook of the Note who addresses the piano in the inimitable fashion he himself invented--Art Carney, Hello ball!--you got yourself sorted and no mistake right here on this record with that eccentric and wonderful ivory tickler, humming along to Haydn at the peak of his own cake shop no less. May the circle, as Roky Erickson used to sing, remain unbroken. Call me Bumptious Q. Bangwhistle if you wish but these tunes by this mostly eighteenth-century Austrian colossus expertly splanked out on the piano by this more contemporary dude who by all accounts ate Arrowroot biscuits to excess are nothing less than lovely and timeless sound recordings. I've never not even once except for maybe one or two times not played these Haydn sonatas at least once a week and each and every time it's the Canadian felly humming that makes this best of music that much better.

Description of Haydn: Piano Sonatas, Hob:XVI, Nos. 42, 48-52

At one point in his life, Gould projected recording a complete Haydn sonata cycle. It's a terrible pity he never got to it, for if he had, the music itself would doubtless be more popular than it is today. Gould himself realized that Haydn's solo keyboard music was generally of higher quality than Mozart's, and we can only be grateful that he did get around to making this delightful set containing the last six sonatas. Aside from his gifts as a musician, Gould was also one of the funniest artists of this century, just as Haydn was in his day. This meeting of two great comics makes for some highly memorable listening. --David Hurwitz
