Music Review: Marvellous Marian Antiphons.

No-one - least of all me,would deny the undoubted enormous musical and historical significance of the recent discovery of the presumed "lost" portions of Haydn's,"Missa Sunt Bona Mixta Malis",and also his Offertorium,"Non nobis,Domine".Yet despite the excellent premier performances they receive on this CD,I don't think that even the most rabid Haydn aficionado (of which I count myself as one) would claim to be exactly knocked out by the quality and content of the music.Now,if they had discovered another of those glorious "late" masses from the 1790's and early 1800's,then that would be a different story altogether.I personally would trample old ladies and babies underfoot in my frantic stampede to the record store to pick up something of that magnitude ! But of course,that unfortunately will never happen;so let's concentrate on the other items on this recording,that will,I guarantee,make far more of a lasting impression on you.I refer to the two Marian Antiphons,the "Salve Regina" and the "Ave Regina".Both contain music of outstanding beauty,and since they are comparatively rare on record,you should waste no time in snapping them up.Even more so,since they are given quite stunning renditions here.Anne Monoyois (one of my favourite sopranos) puts her heart and soul into the former,while Marie-Claude Vallin will enchant your ears,and well-nigh break your heart with her gorgeous interpretation of the latter.Just listen to the final aria,"Vale,O Valde",to see exactly what I mean.So,yes this CD is a valuable archive for missing music from the master,but primarily,for me at any rate,it acts also as a repository for a cluster of known jewels that will have you returning again and again to admire their absolutely blinding lustre.
