Music reviews of Richter plays Haydn, Chopin, Beethoven, Schumann, & Rachmaninov (BBC)Music Review: Showcase for Sviatoslav Richter in the music of Haydn, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann and Rachmaninov Rating: 5 StarsThis great program of music is from the BBC Live archives, presented here in 2CD format. The pianist is the great Russian genius Sviatoslav Richter. The repertoire takes us from the classical world to the late romantics.
First up is Haydn's 37th piano sonata. You'll forgive me for stating that I don't think any of Haydn's sonatas are great masterpieces or anything like that. We must give Haydn credit for his great sense of form and the development of this genre. Still, his sonatas are simply not competitive with his great forays in the genres of the string quartet and the symphony. Richter plays all the repeats, the sonata is done with suppleness and clarity. Lovely work but the music itself is not something I go after very often. Then we enter into a new world and that is Chopin. We get one of his Nocturnes as a breather between the larger works. Richter did not play much Chopin. He didn't have a personal feel for the composer probably but just listen to this Nocturne... what wonderully poetic playing!
Time to move on and we encounter Beethoven's 11th piano sonata. Richter was a great exponent of Beethoven's less famous works and he delivers in spades with this score. Then we get the Eroica Variations, a favorite piece of mine. Richter burns the piano in this work, it's heroic, passionate and has so much laughter and life going on. This recording is one of the best choices for the Eroica Variations.
Disc 2 starts out with Schumann's Symphonic Etudes. Richter plays all the posthumous variations, giving this work a lot of layered depth in the process. The finale is grand and exciting, with a head long rush to the finish line, after which the audience erupts into enthusiastic applause! Just a great, dynamic performance. After the Schumman, Richter plays another gorgeous Chopin Nocturne and then a long selection of Rachmaninov's Preludes. Since Richter was always been one of the most dedicated Rachmaninov interpreters, expect the best, that's what you'll get. The sound for all these performances is great indeed for live recordings. Compared to many other Richter live CDs on other labels, this BBC Live concert sounds outstanding with full stereo sound. Tape hiss is very minimal and the atmoshere is beautifully captured. I recommend this program for anyone who loves great piano playing.
Description of Richter plays Haydn, Chopin, Beethoven, Schumann, & Rachmaninov (BBC)This bargain-priced two-CD set makes Richter's performance of Haydn's Sonata No. 37 in E Major available for the first time in the compact disc era. The pianist performed this work only in the 1967 season. And his remarkable interpretation--imaginative, rhythmically expressive, and always sensitive to the play of Haydn's wit--has not been available since a Turnabout LP disappeared into vinyl oblivion about 20 years ago. The other repertory on these discs is available elsewhere, much of it (the Beethoven Sonata No. 11 and "Eroica" Variations, the 12 Rachmaninov Preludes, and Schumann's Symphonic ?tudes) in superb studio versions. These concert performances, recorded in England during the late 1960s, are nonetheless indispensable to anyone interested in Richter. The "Eroica" Variations, for example, have a Promethean quality and a manic energy that are missing in the studio versions. Richter's Schumann was never less than inspired and never more so than on this occasion in Royal Festival Hall, London, in 1968, when he played the Symphonic ?tudes. There is technical control, variety of nuance, and grasp of design. And there is Richter's chord playing, which was one of the wonders of 20th century pianism. There are other great performances of this work, but none in which every chord in the insanely difficult finale rings out with such power, majesty, and clarity. It's impossible to think of another pianist--not even the composer himself--who ever played Rachmaninov's Preludes with such power and finesse. In the carillon display of the B-flat major Prelude, for example, Richter emphasizes the lower notes of chords in a manner that makes the bass sonorities all but seize the listener by the throat. Piano playing doesn't get any better than this. --Stephen Wigler
