Rhino has come up with another winner in this anthology of most of the artists' singles.
Reviewer Bill Holdship casts a negative light on the track "Ain't That A Shame". What is so great about this track is the 4 Seasons arrangement. Bob Crewe, Bob Gaudio and the other Seasons liked to record covers. They put their own unique touch on them. Changing tempos, the vocal pacing, the harmonies, and, the instrumentation made for fresh approaches and experiences for the group and the listener. Admittedly, some of these approaches were failures, but "Ain't That A Shame" was not one of them. One needs only to look at the album of Burt Bacharach, Hal David and Bob Dylan covers to find examples of the failures. Though even their take on Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" is extremely listenable, rocks and was a sizable hit.
Another reviewer mentioned the lack of two of his favorite tracks, "You Send Me" and "Native New Yorker". "You Send Me" would have been out of place on an album dedicated to the artists' singles. "You Send Me" was never released as a single. "Native New Yorker" may have been left off due to time constraints and the focus on the Vee Jay/Philips material.
The track-listing is what one would expect. I would have liked to have seen the inclusion of some of the MoWest material, the Frankie Valli solo Private Stock material, and, other odds and ends released on the labels FBI, Warner Bros, MCA and Curb. Of course, this may have required a 3 CD set and Rhino seemed intent on releasing only 2 CDs this time around.
Ultimately, where are the reissues of 'Chameleon', 'Closeup' and 'Helicon'? ('Chameleon' has since been reissued by Hip-O Select, and, 'Closeup' and 'Helicon' have since been reissued by collector's choice Music (go to their respective web sites).
The re-mastering is very good. Bill Inglot deserves commendation.
The drum and bass interplay is worthy of study. Nick Massi was an excellent vocal arranger and a pretty good bassist. Joe Long took the bass playing to a whole new level. Beginning with his recording debut on "Opus 17", his expertise clearly shows on "Beggin'", amongst many others.
Tommy DeVito should be commended for some well-played licks and riffs that, though short, make many of these songs. I once saw Mr. DeVito play the lead guitar part of "Tell It to The Rain" in concert and, unless I learm otherwise, suspect he was quite capable in the studio which included great moments like this.
Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio get much of the credit, but it is these musical partners who, also, had a big hand in creating a sound that could lay it on with the ballads but knew how to rock.
Since this release and this review, Rhino has issued a 3 CD/1 DVD box set entitled 'Jersey Beat'. This new box set supercedes this 2 CD release and is most definitely worth checking out (I even think the mastering has improved).

But at one CD, Rhino's distillation of that box set--also titled Anthology--may have been just a tad too short, neglecting cuts ("The Proud One," "Peanuts") that true aficionados wanted on CD. The label remedies the situation with its 2001 Anthology, which, at two CDs, is really only three songs shorter than the 25th Anniversary Collection. Thus, the casual fan may still get a bit more than necessary (including a very vanilla take on Fats Domino's "Ain't That a Shame"). The tradeoff is you'll also get everything you could possibly want by this wonderful group, including the great obscurities (although the label also released a new rarities package, Off Seasons, to coincide with this compilation). It prominently features those amazing '60s radio hits that merged Spector-ish production with East Coast street-corner doo-wop to produce epic miniature rock operas. Much of the imagery in those very class-conscious love stories would turn up in the songs of another great Italian rock star from New Jersey named Springsteen. And to this day, the music and production still sound passionate and glorious. --Bill Holdship
