Music reviews of Zappa in New York

Music Review: The Decadent 1970's at their best
Rating: 5 Stars

Haven't been keeping with my chronological Zappa reviews, a few jumps; oh well.

Live In New York, or "Zappa In New York" is an amazing record, long and short. And where most live records do a little repair in post-production to hide bum notes, and beef the sound up a little, then not tell the consumer, this product, if you will, tells you where augmentations have been utilized, and why. But still, if you gold-plate a dog turd, it will still be a dog turd. Not the case here. Frank Zappa's band, at the end of 1976, played some shows in New York City, and we are fortunate to have this document; it sounds fantastic. Detractors cite crass, mysogenistic song titles and lyrics, and there is a case to be made here, I guess, but ol' Frank just did what his audiences got into - he delivered the goods. The opening track, about female mammalia and malted beverages, has a little something to offend everyone who decides to be offended by a somewhat funny song, but it is actually a very sophisticated piece of modern Vaudville entertainment. The band unapologetically chugs along while Frank has a staged showdown with the Prince of Darkness, portrayed by one Terry Bozzio donning a rubber mask while drumming and singing. He multitasks all through the show, playing from sheet music (how many drummers do this?) as he contributes lead and backing vocals all through these shows.

The band revisits the Mothers with a wordless "Cruisin' For Burgers," then an exercise in music appreciation with a very beautiful instrumental later retitled "Lather." The title here is something you would expect to hear in a hard-core porno film, but it seems he tested his audiences in these cases. If you read such a title, and still proceed to the music and enjoy it, it succeeds on its own terms. Or, he did it to irk those people who cringe at these things. His whole career has been a thumb in the eye of those busybodies who jailed him back in 1965 on a bogus trumped-up obscenity charge by California's Vice Squad for something so stupid, it doesn't even merit retelling here.

"Punky's Whips" is a silly, yet incredibly well-crafted number about glam rocker Punky Meadows, originally left off the record's program by Warner Brothers out of fear of a libel/slander case. But Meadows liked the song; he thought it was funny. This was the beginning of a protracted legal battle that cost everyone involved a fortune. "Honey, Don't You Want A Man Like Me?" is probably the ultimate male chauvenist pig song, but it is played so well, one has to like it, as with the seemingly cruel "Illinois Enema Bandit."

"I'm The Slime" is almost identical to the version from NBC's "Saturday Night Live," with a verse delivered by announcer Don Pardo ("Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!!!), leading into the instrumentals "Pound For A brown," "Manx Needs Women," and "The Black Page."

"Big Leg Emma" is a retread of a failed Mothers Of Invention single, much to this audience's delight. It's "bouncier" here, where the original sounds like something from the 1930's. "Sofa" - what can I say? Very beautiful gem from the early days, revisited on "One Size Fits All," and given new life here. This cuts into an ornate second version of "The Black Page," then Frank's long-time concert staple "The Torture Never Stops," then finally, a pairing-up of "The Purple Lagoon" and "Approximate." It's to be heard to be believed. There is some touch-up work in the studio, but the track itself, recorded live, like everything else here, captures the spectacle of a Frank Zappa concert, from the days when he still enjoyed performing live with live musicians.

Extremely good! bottom line...
