I think that this is the best Zappa album of the eighties other than those culled from the '88 tour. This is the only album to feature David Logeman as the drummer on most tracks - I think he has a less rhythmically embellished style than any of Frank's drummers since the sixties, and the most driving style of all his drummers.
This may be Frank's most power-chord driven album as well, as far as rhythms go. This was the first album which he produced in his own studio (the U.M.R.K.)
Turn on a dime rhythm changes and song transitions abound, making this one of many albums from Frank which can't be fully experienced without gapless playback - i.e. unless your media player supports gapless playback, you ought to listen to this straight off the CD.

You Are What You Is trades in much of Zappa's usual musical acrobatics for more polished and understated fare and increasingly political satire. Released in 1981, this album contains Zappa's takes on the smell of teen spirit, organized religion, Saturday Night Live's Coneheads, and even racial issues.
