Music reviews of Joe's Garage Acts 1-2-3

Music Review: Frank Zappa on Full Tilt
Rating: 5 Stars

Kids in high school don't read record reviews, they hear records in their friends' cars or in a messed up, smelly bedroom. That's how I heard Joe's Garage. This was a record addressed to juvenile delinquents all over the world, because it very well captured everything you knew adults knew about the world, but wouldn't tell you. Sex, drugs, easy chicks, dumb guys, venereal disease, prison sex, prison, fascism and the "man" trying to put you down (ie. your high school principal). Adults trying to "review" a record like Joes Garage will never get the point because it was written to ridicule them. As a teenager, this record was a Godsend because the words were funny and true as hell, had lots of melodies we could all sing drinking beer and more, nasty guitar solos and had some astonishing musical ideas within it.

Unlike most adults, Frank Zappa didn't talk down to kids or lie to them and he certainly didn't talk down to them musically. He knew that kids could understand and sing along to bizarre and complex musical presentations because their brains had not yet not rotted off and they were still capable of receiving new ideas and digesting them. So he relentlessly filled Joes Garage with them. There is some astonishingly complex, inventive music on these grooves. Who else was making music anywhere like this in 1978? Frank Zappa actually treated his teenage listeners like living, thinking, growing human beings -- not dumb, amoeba-like automatons designed to be fed demographically targeted pablum to sell the maximum number of units.

As a teenager, I was drawn to Act I much more than Acts II and III because the latter are much darker and mostly instrumental. Now as an adult I find Acts II and III much more attractive. Act I is party music, Act II is very weird and raunchy party music (which is what we craved as teenagers at 3 a.m. in a gravel pit) and Act III is just plain defiant and sad. This is music teenagers would like to make if they could make it because it goes through all the tribulations and is unrelenting in its honesty, its sadness and its funniness. In these records, Frank Zappa dropped a protective layer of cynicism and let it all hang out. That's why Acts II and III contain some of the best and most emotional playing he ever recorded. It's very obvious he put a lot of heart and weight into this stuff and he knew it was going to be severely trashed by every sad, balding, overweight 30+ "record reviewer" who heard it. But he didn't care. His instincts were right. I can't recommend these records to anyone because they weren't written for people who take advice from record reviews. For musicians or aspiring musicians, I recommend it extremely highly. A number of compositions and performances on this will rip out your short hairs. Peter Wolf's keyboard playing and Vinnie Colaiuta's drumming are standouts. The production and recording are beautifully done. Ike Willis' vocals are sublime yet insane (ie. Lucille and Why Does it Hurt When I Pee?). Frank's guitar solo on "Packard Goose" is probably the most intense and angry work-out I have ever heard. The songs "He Used to Cut the Grass" and "Outside Now" contain playing that is radically outside but not abrasive and remind me of the sad, elegaic playing of David Gilmour at Pink Floyd's most dark moments. "Yo Cats" and copy cats will never capture these emotions in instrumental playing because they are always smiling or frowning for the camera. The Joes Garage records contain some awfully direct and honest material which is why I still very much like them.

The Central Scrutinizer is out to protect you from the harmful effects of that horrible force called music. Such is the premise of Joe's Garage, Frank Zappa's three-act concept album which explores the world of groupies, governments, sex toys, and Catholic school girls. As always, Zappa's aim is true and his scope wide, following Joe (voiced by his long-time co-conspirator, Ike Willis) as he starts a band, loses his girl, falls in love with a robot, and tries to find his true place in society. Filled with catchy classics ("Catholic Girls" "Crew Slut") and blazing guitar work ("Keep it Greasy," "Watermleon in Easter Hay"), this is the sort of schmorgasbord of imagination and artistry that only Zappa could produce. --Andrew Boscardin
