Music Review: Frank (not Lloyd) Wright

Frank Wright should be better known. I just tried a search for his name and most of the links I got were either to the well-known architect or to a Suffolk County policeman who was criminally abusive to a lot of motorists. A shame, because when I hear this album it sticks in the canon of the free jazz greats. To me, Wright's style sounds like a cross between Peter Brotzmann and Albert Ayler, and the overall experience is like listening to the band on Joe McPhee's Underground Railroad with a much better recording. If you've enjoyed any of these-- and let's face it, if you're reading reviews for this album, you've probably heard most of the other stuff already-- then this ESP collection is definitely a sure bet. He played with most of them anyway; it turns out that I'd already heard him on the first track on Cecil Taylor's Olu Iwa, but I don't remember exactly so I'll have to go back to that and give it one more listen. Apparently, FW started out playing R & B, which I definitely hear a little influence of on the beginning of, say, Train Stop. I'd recommend starting with the second disk.
