Music Review: The Worst is Yet To Come

"The Civil War Nashville Sessions" provides an accurate portrait of what the latest Frank Wilhorn musical, "The Civil War," has to offer. It's not a pretty picture. This album fails in every possible way. Every song sounds exceedingly generic, and the album becomes one string of unremarkable country/easy-listening tunes. Wildhorn recruited major country stars to record this album. Surely, he could have come up with something more exciting for them to sing! Poor Linda Eder, whose star-status is dwarfed by other artists on the album including Trisha Yearwood and Amy Grant, is relegated to singing the worst song on the CD. This collection of songs lacks character, originality, and passion. While the CD liner notes tell us that these songs are intended to capture and tell the stories of individuals and how they were affected by the horrors of the Civil War, the only lesson to be learned here is how not to construct a Broadway show: 1. Don't use country and pop stars who lack the vocal strength to deliver show music the way fans of Broadway expect it to be sung. 2. Don't make every song sound like the one before it. 3. Don't create a slew of meaningless characters and have them "tell their stories" by way of a ballad or two. It doesn't work Just like the war itself, the musical interpretaion of this tragic event proves disastrous.
