Music Review: Sinatra at his artistic pinnacle

While not always found on favorite/recommended lists of Frank Sinatra's albums, "The Concert Sinatra" is at the pinnacle of his artistry.
As has been noted, this is not a live performance, but a carefully designed studio production. A half century ago, "concert" connoted an elevated artistic endeavor, something much more than merely "live performance" as the term is used today. Here, it designates a singular selection of material and special style of performance.
It is a short album. and is sometimes criticized for that, as more tracks could have easily been added to the CD. Yet each selection chosen for inclusion is a gem, and, a little like Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, the album may leave you wishing for more, but what we have approaches perfection.
"Lost in the Stars" has never been more poignant; "Old Man River," long a showcase for operatic voices, has seldom been rendered with more eloquence and control; "You'll Never Walk Alone" is soul stirring; and it's hard to imagine how any father could fail to be moved by Sinatra's inspired rendition of "Soliloquy."
But nothing I could say would sum this album up as well as Nancy Sinatra did in 2003, when she opined, "THE finest collection of his career. With Dad's collection, it's always difficult to pick a favorite song but a favorite album is a slam-dunk. This is not only Dad's finest but one the finest ever in the history of recorded music."

Description of The Concert Sinatra
The Concert Sinatra is one of Frank Sinatra's best records of the early `60s! The album is not a live recording, but, instead, an album that successfully rearranges a special selection of show tunes (primarily those composed by the legendary Richard Rodgers) that ole' blue eyes was then performing regularly to his live audiences. Nelson Riddle arranged and conducted one of the largest orchestras that had ever supported Frank Sinatra, and his work is light and delicate. Despite the large number of musicians, the music is never overbearing; instead, it is grand and sweeping. Sinatra is given the opportunity to demonstrate his full emotional range, from the melodrama of "Ol' Man River" to the tender romanticism of "Bewitched," which helps make The Concert Sinatra one of his most fulfilling albums of the era. Digitally remastered from the original tapes, The Concert Sinatra includes two BONUS TRACKS and newly written liner notes by FRANK SINATRA, JR.This misleadingly titled 1963 collaboration with Nelson Riddle is not a live album, but rather a collection of eight numbers (half of them Rodgers and Hammerstein compositions) from popular stage musicals. It's not exactly the swinging Sinatra of myth and legend, but it does make for a stunning musical experience; the Chairman is in great voice, and he scales the explosive orchestral peaks of Riddle's arrangements with the confidence of a mountain climber on methedrine. His versions of "Ol' Man River" and "Soliloquy" are big improvements over his Columbia-era attempts, and "You'll Never Walk Alone," "My Heart Stood Still," and "Lost in the Stars" are positively breathtaking. --Dan Epstein
