Music Review: Sinatra is in Fine Voice

This record is very different than the other Sinatra record that I have on my list of the best ten records of 1962. Sinatra Sings Songs from Great Britain was infused with strings. No chorus of violins here. Sinatra is in vine voice, I think anyway. Others have said he sounded tired, but I disagree. Count Basie and his band are right on, a perfect match for the Chairman of the Board.
My favorite song on this record is "Nice Work if You Can Get it," which is radically different than the two versions I was used to sung by Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. This is a nice, jazzy upbeat version. My second favorite song here is "I Only Have Eyes for You", and I really like "I Won't Dance".
Sadly, though I'd come back to this record on occasion and to the few other Sinatra I owned over the next few years, times were changing, my musical taste along with them and though I'd have a life long love affair with Billie Holiday, there wouldn't be another Sinatra, Big Band or Jazz record that would excite me for a very long time out side of Money Jungle. Blues too, was going to take a back seat. The British invasion is on the horizon, Bob Dylan puts out his first record, the Beach Boys are Surfin', as are Jan and Dean, Peter, Paul and Mary are on their way to a number one hit and I'm gonna get caught up in it all.
