Music reviews of Classic SinatraMusic Review: Truly A Classic Sinatra, They Can't Take That Away From Him! Rating: 5 Stars
He was the man who wore so many hats as a crooner, actor, director, producer, and businessman. The Chairman of the Board. The Ol' Blue Eyes. The Voice of the Century. The Musical Phenomenon. The Greatest Singer Of All-Time. The Singer For All Seasons. The one and only, Mr. Francis Albert Sinatra.
The most prolific singer America ever produced, Sinatra has the most number of albums recorded throughout his musical career. He has worked with the legendary Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Nelson Riddle, Axel Stordahl and Billy May. He has collaborated with fellow artists Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Antonio Carlos Jobim, Kenny G, Natalie Cole, Carly Simon, and Tony Bennett, to name a few. He has interpreted almost all the best songs composed by Gershwin, Cole, Kern, Berlin, Mercer, Hammerstein, Rodgers & Hart, Warren, Arlen, Carmichael and Cahn, among countless others. He's probably the most accomplished and fulfilled singer, not only among his contemporaries but also among all other singers to date.
This CD is so precious to me. With its selection of twenty all-time favorites, what more can you ask for? I always enjoy listening to this CD from the first track, swingy and upbeat "I've Got The World On A String," one of his most famous signature songs, to the finale "Nice 'N' Easy," taken from his "Nice 'N' Easy" album which I learned from my late father that it was number one in the billboard for so many weeks and eventually became a gold album.
Every time I hear his version of my favorite Cole Porter song, "Night And Day," I remember a story I read from the book, "Sinatra: An Intimate Portrait of A Very Good Year," that sometime in the late '30s, Cole Porter visited the club where he was singing and in honor of the songwriter, he sang "Night And Day" and to his embarrassment forgot the lyrics but kept on singing "night and day, day and night, night and day" for fifteen bars. I guess he got so self-conscious and couldn't think of the right words.
His renditions of "All The Way," "Someone To Watch Over Me," Put Your Dreams Away," "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" and "My Funny Valentine" are heartfelt and filled with emotions. The one thing I admired most about Sinatra is his ability to interpret a song in his own distinctive style and still maintain the essence of the song. Likewise, as if these wonderful classics were written with him in mind as the singer.
My topmost favorite is track #3, George and Ira Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away From Me" with its nice intro...."There are many, many crazy things that will keep me loving you and with your permission, may I list a few.... the way you wear your hat, the way you sip your tea, the memory of all that, no, no they can't take that away from me, the way your smile just beams, the way you sing off key, the way you haunt my dreams, no, no they can't take that away from me...." I could listen to this track repeatedly, it's absolutely beautiful, the lyrics, the melody, the voice, it's totally awesome! A Gershwin gem!
Other highlights are "Nice 'N' Easy," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "You Make Me Feel So Young," "Young At Heart" and "Come Fly With Me." Almost all the songs were arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle except for "Come Fly With Me" and "Come Dance With Me" which were arranged and conducted by Billy May. Also, these songs were digitally remastered from fourteen different albums he recorded between 1953 and 1960.
I highly recommend this essential Sinatra CD. Even if you're not a fan, you will truly enjoy listening to it not once but forever.

Description of Classic Sinatra Franks Sinatra Photos More from Ole Blue Eyes Romance: Songs From the Heart | No One Cares | Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely | The Capitol Years | A Swingin' Affair | Come Dance with Me! | Few would dispute that Frank Sinatra was one of the greatest popular singers of the 20th century. His voice had distinct power and majesty, whether he was belting out a swinging dance number or softly crooning a tender ballad. When he was at his height, no one could touch him, and the songs collected on Classic Sinatra showcase the range of his talent. Recorded during his memorable run for Capitol Records in the 1950s, the songs here are more than just his best, they're often the definitive recordings: "I Get a Kick out of You," "Young at Heart," "Witchcraft," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "In the Wee Small Hours," and "I've Got You Under My Skin." Like almost everything Sinatra recorded during this period, there isn't a dud to be found, which makes Classic Sinatra a perfect introduction to the work of this truly great talent. --Robert Burrow
