Music Review: Wasted Gold on Watered-Down Performance

The performance captured here is a watered-down, edited performance of one of the Villa Venice shows. The Rat Pack performed there in late 1962 for two weeks, and their performances were captured by noted recording engineer Wally Heider. As can be expected, in some shows they would hit the nail, and in other shows they would miss. This is a show wherein they missed. Sinatra's monologue was cut short, sounded weary and lacked punch. What's worse is: Dino's monologue was completely edited out. The listener who is fortunate enough to have listened to the out-of-print two-volume set "Villa Venice Chicago, 1962" put out by Jazz Hour would know what I mean. To add insult to disappointment, the CD itself was poorly manufactured by careless workers. After removing the tightly sealed cellophane wrapper and opening the elaborate jewel case, I noticed conspicuous finger print smudges on the top of my brand new CD! I turned it over to inspect the exquisite gold and found, to my horror, either foreign particles or air bubbles encased in the plastic in various locations! I asked the maker, DCCCompact, at their website to address this issue and have not heard from them. This CD may be slightly better mixed/restored but buy at your own risk. (A word of caution for the person trying to find a copy of the Jazz Hour classic: There are a lot of illegal CD-R copies floating around, especially through the Internet auction houses.)
Description of Summit: In Concert
Debut release on the Sinatra Family's Artanis label (th rough DCC), a stunning stereo live recording featuring Frank Sinatra alongside his singing Rat Pack buddies Dean Marti n and Sammy Davis Jr. performing at the Villa Venice in Chicago in November 1962. Digitally remastered from the origina l tapes and pressed on a 24 karat gold disc, it features 20 tracks clocking in at an amazing 79 minutes. Each copy is individually numbered. Comes packaged in a standard jewel case within a colorful die-cut slipcase cover with the CD booklet hidden inside.Drunken, tacky, and undoubtedly a piece of history, The Summit: In Concert captures a 1962 Chicago supper-club show by the three biggest names in the Rat Pack. The apparently unedited tape clocks in at more than 78 minutes, with plenty of the trio's banter preserved--for better or worse. (Sinatra: "Shut up, Sam, and sit in the back of the bus!" Davis: "Jewish people don't sit in the back of the bus!" Sinatra: "Jewish people own the bus!") There's some fine singing, of course; though Sinatra seems to be going through the motions during most of his solo miniset, his "When Your Lover Has Gone" is a highlight, as is Davis's "Out of this World." More an intriguing document than an entertaining repeat listen--thanks in part to the anarchic interruptions of many of the second half's songs--Summit is for those who already own the guys' truly worthy recordings. --Rickey Wright
