Music Review: Best case for the Violin Concerto

This is a passionate and lyrical work, but it's also quite concentrated and can be difficult to assimilate. Of the 3 recordings of the Violin Concerto that I know, Erxleben, Scheiderhan with Ansermet, and this one, it's this that makes the strongest impression. Erxleben is too cool, with sound from MDG to match. The Ansermet-led recording is in fine mono sound, but the work definitely benefits from stereo (though it's in a Decca Martin compilation you should have anyway). While the sound of this recording has come up a bit more strident than the Lp (which is worth looking for if you spin vinyl), its transparency and presence is a great help in following Martin's orchestration. The producer has put the violin to the right of center, which sounds odd at first, but works here to keep the violin from dominating the orchestra.
UPDATE: It turns out that this CD uses pre-emphasis. I suspect my CD player does not apply the corresponding deemphasis, which is responsible for the strident sound.
