Music Review: Rare traditional Black guitar Blues & Banjo Playing

This is rare important music for those who wish to preserve African American heritage. Hovington is a tradition-learned Black guitarist and Banjo player. While very much has been made of Blusicians from the deep South and Banjoists from the Appalachians, this is a man from Delaware, which many forget was a slave state and is part of what I call the upper Piedmont South.
African American banjo, buck dance, flat foot dance, and square dance traditions lasted longer in Virgnia, Maryland, North Carolina, and West Virginia, than elsewhere both among African Americans and among European Americans. So the guitar and the blues came in when these dances were still current. A guitar style called the Piedmont Style developed that played blues in an upbeat and swinging rhythm, with more chord harmony than say Mississippi Blues, a guitar style that was equally able to accompany those who wanted to dance to tunes of the old music. Hovington is a master of that style. His blues and rag time guitar tunes have the same swing and much of the humor and bite that I expect in Piedmont Blues.
What is more rare is to find an African American banjoist and even rarer to find a tradition learned Black banjoist who plays the raggy finger style banjo that you hear on this CD. This is a rare find, as well as a rare treat.
This is a nice record regardless of its historical and cultural importance, but this is important. Give it a listen and step into our history.
