Music Review: Great Recording!

A bit of background is in order regarding the items on this reissued CD. The Poulenc Organ Concerto was originally releas- ed as a filler for a Telarc organ CD by Michael Murray entitled Organ Concert a la Francaise which also featured solo items recorded at Symphony Hall in Boston. The two choral works on this release were originally issued on their own. The Stravinsky is also available on a Telarc CD coupled with the Four Sacred Pieces of Verdi, sylistic differences aside. So if you want this CD, you will have to deal with some duplication of repertoire.
That said, one would be hard pressed to find better performances than on this CD. The account of the Poulenc Gloria by Shaw and company perfectly captures the jazziness and eccentricity of the score. The fast movements, notably the Laudamus Te are taken at such an infectious clip that one is tempted to sing and dance along with the score. The slow movements are
done very expressively with a keen sense of the text and Judith Blegen is superb in her solos.
The Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms is given a lovely straightforward performance which in this case underscores the somber, cold sonorities of this work, in which violins and violas are totally absent from the orchestral palette. However, Shaw
keeps the rhythm from sagging at all times, very important in this work most notably at the beginning with the orchestra's
motoric ostinato underneath the chorus and most crucially, in the vast closing movement which here is taken by Shaw at
just the right tempo - this last section cannot be taken too slowly or it will fall apart - here it sounds utterly correct.
In both the Poulence and the Stravinsky the chorus and orchestra perform under Robert Shaw with their usual faultless
poise,intonation and understanding of the texts. You can't go wrong with these performances.
The Poulenc Organ Concerto is a roof-raising showpiece that requires not only an excellent orchestra but also a virtuoso
organist and an organ capable of the many dynamic requirements that Poulenc asks. This recording with Shaw, the ASO and
Michael Murray has all three. From the unforgettable opening organ flourish introducing the raucous first movement, to the
tender slow movement, to the saucy, eccentric finale, everything is in place here for a memorable performance, one of the
best on CD. While I hope that the the classic Biggs/Ormandy/Philadelphia recording on Columbia (now Sony) will someday find
its way to CD, I am totally won over by this present Shaw recording, and with the choral works noted above as a substan- tial, worthwhile coupling, I urge you to buy this CD and enjoy before these performances are taken out of print yet again.
