Music Review: decent performance of a genuine rarity

I purchased this mainly for the Cavalli Requiem, a massive, 8-part piece that stretched the form to it's limits within the confines of a cappella 'stile antico' writing. The Dies irae is surprising for the drama Cavalli is able to obtain without use of instrumental accompaniment.
This performance leaves a bit to be desired, it's a bit over-stated at times, and intonation suffers somewhat, but generally quite fine. This is definitely worth owning.
The Monteverdi Mass is somewhat perfuctory, but then, the Missa in illo tempore is not one of Monteverdi's more exciting works. This particular work completes the 1610 Vespers; the Missa formed part of that publication but is usually not recorded along side the Vespers music.
