Music Review: Concerto Palatino in their element

This was the first disc I ever bought featuring Concerto Palatino, and I have been a huge fan ever since. This is exactly the type of music that suites them, as it was played by the original Concerto Palatino in Bologna three centuries ago. The sound of cornetts and sackbuts is one of my favorite sonorities of which I never tire, and Bruce Dickey et al do it as well as anyone in the world.
The repetoire here is uniformly wonderful, with some very obscure composers proving that there is a wealth of undiscovered talent unknown to the modern listener. I especially like the Gussago sonata La Rizza for four sackbuts and the passegiatti of Palestrina motets by Bassano. The subtlety and flexability of the cornetto is shown to stunning effect in the latter.
There are some excellent discs featuring this sort of ensemble doing similar repetoire, but this is one of the best.
