Music reviews of Christophe Rousset ~ Couperin - Fourth Book of Harpsichord PiecesMusic Review: 1 of best recorded performances ever (harpsichord/otherwise) Rating: 5 StarsRousset's recorded output has been relatively uneven at best. Though possessed with formidible technique and volumes of gusto, he often overdoes it in the grandiosity department. Not so here - you will not find more sensitivity [both in terms of sound and emotional attitude] anywhere, maybe in all of music. And to realize this as regards possibly the most difficult to interpret and complex music in the entire literature of the harpsichord - it's simply astounding. Rousset masters it thoroughly with his spirited and often humbly appealing interpretations. He must have worked long, long hours to put so much heart into these recordings. Next to him, Ruggiero Gerlin's old LPs sound utterly foolish; even Kenneth Gilbert sounds "hard" by comparison; Olivier Baumont comes off as merely tepid.[At turns red velvet, or cooling forest streams . . . high-blown festivity . . . and various shades of melancholy and/or anguish.] German and Italian music never took the naturalistic path that Couperin so thoroughly inhabited and mastered. Couperin in this, his last book/volume of pieces, displays so much melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic/metrical genius as to make me imagine even the likes of Bach shaking in his slippers upon experienceing it. A completely masterly, innovative display of mood and atmosphere, evoking subtly powerful emotional/spiritual spaces/states - this music becomes by turns passionate, tender and all shades in between. Francois set the stage for 200+ years of French composition, all the way up to and past the so-called Impressionists; he possibly surpasses them all. The dynamic combination of Couperin and Roussets molds one's mind, elevates and cleanses one's heart - you'll revel at the new places you will find yourself being courageously, passionately, sometimes quietly led. There is as much subtlety, power and descriptive panache that might leave one elevated and completely spellbound. If you can't find this set of CDs, by all means locate a library that owns it, and listen to them there. You'll be in wonder at the profoundly variegated shapes your soul is being poured into and through.
Description of Christophe Rousset ~ Couperin - Fourth Book of Harpsichord PiecesFrançois Couperin was the greatest keyboard composer of the French Baroque, and his achievement, in both quality and quantity, is comparable only to Scarlatti's and Bach's. His fourth (and last) book of harpsichord music was published in 1730, a few years before the composer's death, and it represents a summing up of his career as a composer for his favorite instrument. These eight suites (or "ordres") contain fewer works than in the earlier books, but each one is a gem. Christophe Rousset's performances are simply the finest available, both in terms of interpretation and sound. These two discs are a fitting conclusion to a sensational series. --David Hurwitz
