Music reviews of Skin & Bones

Music Review: we all love Shiftlett but isnt Smear the man?
Rating: 5 Stars

A warning, I'm starting this review before the CD has even finished playing it's virgin run in my CD player. Live albums can be a minefield. Usually the idea of a full length live acoustic set can start as an interesting experiment and quickly descend into a pit of monotony and repetition. If you're the kind of person who is unable to appreciate music unless it's driven solely by fuzzy guitars and fake guttural roaring (E.G. Trivium albums.) you'll hate this. However if you switch onto bands when you hear well constructed songs with nuanced chord structures and lyrics that can swing between riddlous nonsense and emotional nail-on-heads, you'll already know the Foo Fighters. And where as in the past they have followed closer to their hardcore roots, here they show maturity, joy and a fresh voice to present their sublime back catalogue. Skin And Bones, for me, completes my holy trinity of live albums. Started with Frampton Comes Alive (an album so loved I named my MySpace page in it`s honour.) through Jeff Buckley's Mystery White Boy, landing here.
In my review for In Your Honour I criticised the album for being stuck on a creative crossroads between what Grohl's audience were expecting and what his instincts told him mixed with a new road of being in a place of contentment that showed more laid back joy. While this would never be able to be seen as in anyway an apology for the shortcomings of In Your Honour, (nor should it) it does however show a greater risk taken by one of modern music's most influential and best loved figure heads. It also without doubt proves that Grohl has written a song that (as anyone who knows me will have been told ad infinitum) is one of our generations greatest rock songs. This record secures Everlong as worthy of title: Best Ever Rock Songs along side Stairway To Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody and such like. FACT!
The key to the album's success is suggested in the accompanying sticker on the cover `unique interpretations' since you have songs which fit ultra comfortable in the acoustic setting, such as February Stars, however even still, the songs have been given a breath of life and been reworked so beautifully it sounds like they were written like this, this way, the day before, always feeling spontaneous. And yet somehow familiar. The arrangements are lush and filled with life and an almost country style richness. Other more unusual choices such as Best Of You sound like were in a dark dingy folk club with some young kid wanting to burst with the energy of his love of his rich musical world- Yet another reason why Dave is such a joy to listen to, since as a man approaching his middle ages, an artist who has paid his dues and yet still sings like he's just finally on the cusp of his big break, and has everything to fight for. Every track has something new and interesting about it. My one criticism is that the performance is so accomplished the audience are sent into such a frenzy throughout, their constant whooping can become annoying stepping on my own pet hate, clapping along to songs. Word to every audience: your not helping, the guys on stage got it covered. Having said that, the one most powerful moment on the album is right at the end, the audiences warmth as they support Dave's vocal is the essence of what a live album is for. The very magic that happens in a live performance is so divine your only reaction can be to sing. You cant capture that magic in a studio setting. It's very synergy during Everlong is exactly the reason upon first listen you cant help but be moved to tears, rediscovering it's sensuality. Forever reminding you of your first moment you discovered love, heartbreak and your own strength through your vulnerability.
This is without doubt Foo Fighters best album since The Colour And The Shape. (My number 1 album of all time.) And it is so because the fire in their bellies has been missing since. Always writing fantastic songs. But always seemed as though they were being recorded for posterity. Here they are alive, like Wind Up and Chicken Derby`s recordings. But here playing newer more mature material. I'd kill to have been there. I'd kill to have them record all their back catalogue like this- just to see what they sound like. How would Aurora have turned out? What about Monkey Wrench? Alone And Easy Target would've bounced along with ease. All just a pretty dream I have. Thank god we got these fifteen tracks, mostly consisting of the second side of In Your Honour. Which is great, it was the better album. Point proved. Next Foo Fighters: The Country Album- I'd buy it.

Description of Skin & Bones

One of the biggest and most important rock bands in the world releases "Skin & Bones" for the first time on vinyl!
Here's Dave Grohl as you've seldom seen him before: not just live, but as the title Skin And Bones may hint, stripped down to his acoustic core. Well actually, not quite. Rather than just Grohl and a six-string, this collection--recorded at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles--harks back to the ensemble feel of Nirvana's 1994 album Unplugged in New York, familiar songs rebuilt by the Foos and a cast of musicians including violinist Petra Haden, keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and even a member of that now legendary Nirvana session, Pat Smear. Stripped of the anthemic breeziness and solid, muscular riffing that have become Foo trademarks, Skin And Bones relies more on prettifying the arrangements with strings, shakers, and slow splashes of cymbal, and occasionally uncovering new levels of pathos beneath the sweat and grit. "Walking After You" feels custom-written for this format, while the crescendos of "My Hero" gain a little more humanity in this more intimate setting. And when the bigger hits come, Grohl makes up for the absence of feedback and fireworks with sheer frontman charisma, summoning up some throaty Springsteen emotiveness on "Best of You" and climaxing with a heroic "Everlong." --Louis Pattison
